I had a call from some people in Colorado that want me to drive from Tenn to Slidell LA to redo their home. They were told by there insurance agent that it was up to them to get a contractor and they know me from my work in Colorado.
I advised them to get with their local building dept to make sure that everything would be Ok. Then we could talk
I’m not out to hose anybody. But I ain’t going there for free. I have an hourly number in mind but am unsure about gas and lodging. Since there could be such a fluctuation in it.
When I was a road warrior it was 45.00 an hour, 45 cents a mile and 60.00 a day per diem.
I ‘ve seen ads where some companies are hiring and paying a whopping 10.00 and hour to go there.
I’d like to hear some other thoughts on this.

We're you getting $45 as an employee or were you running a company? That seems pretty low for a billing rate of a company.
Good to let them handle the bulding dept. You would also want to make sure you don't need any special licenses (local business license, state contractor's, etc.) or that you're compensated for securing those.
How will you find lodging? I would imagine the local hotels will not be available.

Depending on where the house in Slidell is will determine the cost of reconstruction. You will have to deal with lack of a reliable power source, which means generators. In addition, materials will be available only within a 100 mile radius from the jobsite.
So ask yourself if it's worth the time and trouble to rebuild this home. I know there are plenty of contractors in ST. Tammany parish who will do the work. It will just take a lot of time.

Dependiong on the condition of the house, you might be able to stay there. I don't think Slidell flooded so maybe the damage isn't too bad.

slidell is bad, totally wipe out.The eye went right over.
just remember in slidell, they is no wood, no material, no labor, no hotel. you pretty much need to carry it with you or drive 100 miles. and then anything left out is gone.need to wait till at least nov for the area to calm down.
The only price I've heard is $3.00 a squre to put tarps on roofs. They guarantee 120 sg. a day min. Wages arent very good in most parts on La.
I am currently working for an engineering company doing damage assessment in the aftermath of Katrina (primarily Biloxi/Gulfport) and I can tell you that within 500 yds of the beach in this area most commercial and residential structures are just a slab and a memory.
I am supposed to be going into Gretna, LA sometime this week.
With respect to doing work in th NOLA area several logistical problems come to mind which I pretty much deal with on a daily basis.
1. All food and water that you think you'll consume will need to be carried in daily.
2. Fuel. I'm not sure but I think fuel may be an issue in and around NOLA.
3. The closest lodging that I can find right now is in Baton Rouge.
4. Access and security. In Biloxi/Gulfport south of the railroad tracks towards the casinos the National Guard requires an access pass issue by the local authorities.
I'm sure things are improving much more than the talking heads are reporting but.....just food for thought
Best Regards

You might want to look at getting a small travel trailer. I know some guys who work highway jobs and the like do this. Then check what hookups could be done at the site, or maybe at a campground nearby.
