that depends on the details...
If you get crazy you can explode the tool and die I suppose.
I loaned a compressor to someone who inflated the cup on his spray gun to alarming porportions. The new cup held more than before.
You don't want to be around stuff exploded by air pressure.............
Ask Junkhound -- I'm sure he'sdone it.
Since you asked:
Framing guns - the seals blow first, but you can shoot a 3-1/4" inch about 200 feet! 150 psi is highest I've gone though. You can get some pretty good accuracy out to about 30 feet or so also.
air impact wrenches - they run like heck (aka really fast), and you can shear off a common 1/2" bolt with a 1/2" drive, can break off a car wheel stud with a 3/4" drive at 150 psi. Suspect the motor vanes may wear faster than linear, but have never had an air impact problem up to 150 psi
- did I ever talk about the time of using a propane bottle for pressure source (outdoor only of course). Even a 3/4" drive at 150 psi will not break a rusted (after liberal heat, wd40, etc) on JD final drive sprocket 1" bolt, heck wont even loosen it - had to bounce on the end of a 10 ft piece of 2" pipe 'torque amplifier' on a 3/4" drive socket to break that one loose.
Finish guns - was using 120 psi on a HF 16 ga nailer to nail some hard maple, the interior bolt attaching to the piston to the hammer broke off inside.
If there is enough interest and folks willing to make a contribution to replace a nail gun <G>, I'll go hook my N2 bottle up to a nail gun, crank down on the pressure regulator, and see what blows first - although I suspect it would simply be the hose.
Of course if you want high pressure (and blow out a few windows in nearby houses), squirt a few oz of propane into an empty 55 gal bbl and ignite it remotely. Another story there also <g>
