Hi all,
I’m closing the gap, about 6 1/2″, between my wall cabinets and the ceiling. I installed 1 by material on the top of the cabinets to which I want to nail a 4″ riser of veneered 3/4″ plywood. To this riser I will then nail 3 1/2″ crown molding which will go to the ceiling. The majority of the crown will have ceiling joists to which it can be attached. Will 18 gauge nails be okay for this setup? Seems a little small but I’d rather not use a 15 gauge if I don’t have. Thanks for your help.

I'm now also wondering if I should install taller blocking on top of the cabinets so that I can support the tops of the risers with nails as well. Not sure if this is overkill or appropriate given the amount of material I'm going to install above the cabinets.
I would guess the 18 ga nails, if long enough, would be ok. Especially if you use some adhesive.
Does the cabinet have a recess at the top or is it flush?
18 gauge should be plenty, I'm a finish carpenter and run into similar situations, use a quality adhesive and your should be okay. If you get to installing and it doesn't seem up to your standards try a 16 gauge nailer, smaller hole than a 15 and better holding power than an 18. Good luck!
