Nails for Treated Lumber

MrSQL | Posted in Construction Techniques on January 21, 2005 03:45am

Hello,

Will using galvanized nails (Passlode) hold up for use on the new treated lumber?  I’ve heard that nails for this usage should be stainless steel or double hot dipped galvanized due to the corrosive properties of the new treated lumber.  Can you get staniless steel nails for a Passlode?  I’m an owner/builder (central North Carolina) buying materials for my house.

Nail usage:

  • PT mud sills
  • PT plywood for 2′ bottom band

Thanks,

Roger <><

    Rodger,

I use Paslode and Paslode makes the nails for ACQ they will have a stamp on the box. You should use them on the mudsill and you should also use them when you nail through the floor joists and into the mudsill.

Why the pt for bottom band?

<>Why the pt for bottom band?<>

Builder friend of mine used 24" of PT plywood to tie the walls to the floor system (for strength) and as a back-up incase there is any water infiltration, wicking, condensation ...  So, for the extra couple hundred dollars (really less) I figured it was worth it (I want this house to last many generations).

Roger, don't forget to order the ACQ rated anchor bolts for your mason.  I am on a $35 million dollar job that literally got held up because I printed the article about ACQ from FHB and handed it to the job super.

          Hello Dustin,

I believe the code allows 1/2" regular steel anchor bolts with the treated lumber.  anyway, that's what's in aleady.  If there is a corrosion concern, is there anything I can do short of drilling and epoxying in new anchor bolts? (e.g. prime or paint them).

          Thanks,

          Roger <><

In my experience the coating on any stick nail is subject to fracture with the force of being driven leaving the raw steel exposed. The other associated issue is that the guage of stick nails is significantly lighter than their common counterparts. To the best of my knowlege the only currently approved fasteners for ACQ and CA lumber are hot-dipped galvy or stainless. using anything else may void any manufacturers warantee.

It may take more time to hand nail but not enough to justify using a fastener not approved by the lumber manufacturer.

That said I'd love to see numatic nails that are approved. So long as they cost less than gold

Personally, I'd rather see an end to this tendency to take away good, functional materials like CCA-treated lumber from us.  As you know, ACQ is less toxic but it's also more corrosive to fasteners and less effective and long-lasting as a treatment.  All building materials have different properties and the right selection is a balancing act amongst them.  Toxicity is just one of many, and there are lots of other building materials which are toxic.  Sure I wouldn't use uncoated CCA for kids' play structures, but why wouldn't I be able to get it for use as mudsills or deck joists?!

I wish the people who wanted to protect me from stuff would ask me first...!

Chuck: Check out Bostitch's take on nails for ACQ lumber. BTW they make both Round head and clipped for ACQ wood.

        Ben

        Thanks for the link

My only question regards the manufacturer's approval of these fasteners. Am going to do more research on this. I think I would use those bostich fasteners on my own project but if the manufacturers dont approve them specifically that does'nt help my customers with regards to warranty. I did however note that bostich is offering stainless coallated fasteners which are approved. I hate to think of the cost of a box of these.

It would seem that the info pipeline is a bit slow on the streets in these parts (sw NH)

        thanks Again

I asked my supplier the same Q. He siad the Paslode galvies i was buying were the rigth ones, but I'm still the skeptical kind, so I asked him to see if he could get me SS nails to fit the gun.
what he found were boxed under a generic label, lisitng some other namesalso, but they worked in the Paslode

Second that... get SS nails for your gun, from Maze or from Paslode if possible. If not, get a Senco gun and SS nails from them. We're getting all sorts of SS fasteners from Senco now... staples, finish nails, framing nails.
