I’ve got an old Stanley worm drive saw that’s gone belly up. There’s a brass (sacrificial) gear in it that’s worn out (stripped). Any idea where I can find a replacement? I’m told it’s model W8, last made in the 50s.
I talked to Stanley — they sold their power tools division long ago to Bosch, who in turn sold their stock of Stanley parts to an electrical supplier in California who doesn’t seem to know anything about non-electrical parts.
Anyone know where I might find such a thing? Yeah I know, I should buy a new one, but there’s nothing quite like a portable saw ya gotta pick up with two hands…

Toss that anchor out onto the ice. It'll sink in the spring.
Then go buy a sidewinder!

*Embrace the new technology and get yourself a Mag77. Just my humble opinion.
*Pete, Give this place a ring: "Tool Pros", (206)-525-6448; they're located in Seattle, Wa. They seem to have a lot of older (often times used) parts for power tools. Sam
*There is a photojournalist who works for the Washington Post newspaper - I don't remember his name. He collects Stanley power tools and has leads on places that still might have parts. You could call the Post and see if they can identify him - he apparently gets a lot of inquiries about Stanley power tools. You do have the option of getting a machine shop to mill you a new gear - could be pricey but if you like the saw, go for it!
*Yeah, I thought about getting one made. Pretty nasty though, since it's not only a spiral, it's also got big splines on the inside.
*Tool Pros would take it for parts, but doesn't have the gear. Good suggestion though. They had actually worked on them way back when.
