Looking to buy a laptop computer.
nothing fancy … very basic business stuff.
seeing as how I’m gonna be living in a hotel the next coupla weeks …
wireless internet “stuff” already installed is one of the main goals.
also … cd/dvd player.
anyone got one they’d like to sell for a coupla hundred bucks?
Pretty sure I can get what I want for at or under $500 new …
so somewhere around $350 for used is what I have in mind.
Jeff
probably gonna buy something next week or the following week.

This is a killer deal thru Dell:
Inspiron 640m
Pentium Dual-Core
Windows XP home *or* Vista basic
Details:
$649 thru 6/13/07
Free Shipping :)
"Small and Medium business" flyer
E-Value code: 65020-BNPCFFX (XP) or 65020-BNPCFFV (Vista)
The original deal came with a 6 cell battery for the same price, and the e-value code will not come up in a search, so you have to call 888-371-3355. It is on page 39 of the current small business print ad.
I did not find a similar configuration from anyone else for the same money.

I bought my wife a refurbed one from Dell a few years ago. Nice unit. Real decent price, and more horse power and features then a new one. And a couple hundred cheaper.

well ... at least I call it "helping" ... (T&G ceiling first, trim next, then tile)
not sure how he phrases it in mixed company.
Millersburg Ohio ... land of the Amish.
I been thinking of getting a laptop ...
seeing as how the hotel I picked has wireless internet for free ...
figured between that and dvd's ... I'd be less bored.
back for this weekend ... and now "back" ... a coupla unforeseen days ...
due to my back.
it siezed up Fri morn ... didn't get better on the ride home like I was praying for.
so ... looks like trim won't start tomorrow afternoon as planned ... thinking Wed is more realistic. Went to the Chiro on Fri ...
will see him one Mon then again before heading out Wed.
BTW ... wife came home from a picnic this afternoon ... seems that little "knock" she's been hearing is now a confirmed "clunk" ...
her car is heading into the shop hopefully on Tues ...
and I'm pretty sure that'll eat up the "extra laptop money" I had setting around.
Might not be buying one this month after all.
gotta see how expensive her "clunk" sounds ...

AMD is better than Penium...
find one with XP rather than Vista....
Vista has serious compatilbility issues..

>Vista has serious compatilbility issues..<
I can attest to that. Using a Vista LT right now, although it's not terrible, there are plenty of inconveniences. Little things like card readers, digital camera uploads via USB don't have drivers developed yet. And we're not talking brand new lead edge hardware, stuff that's several years old.
There are ways around certain things but you have to work at it. It took me more than a week to get Sketchup to work and then it was dicey. SU released a version recently that works better but it still hangs if you start it the normal way (the workaround I use works better now and I've no issues using it now).
The built in wireless access is very good though.
went dual boot with XP pro to try and be able to run my existing software... guess what...
drivers there too with this machine....

I would normally recommend an IBM Thinkpad (like a Bosch), but the price range you list is better for an HP (like a Ryobi).
My laptop buying guide: Slow processor, Low RAM (add your own for cheap), low HD (add your own 7200 RPM drive for cheap), discrete video subsystem (no On Board Graphics or Intel Graphics). Might consider a 14.1" widescreen, it fits better when the airplane seat in front of you tilts back.
I'm sure this doesn't help you at all, but I live and work with my laptop. Weight and function are very important to me, thats why I like IBM T series so much.

They have two lines, the Lenovo and the Thinkpad. I've heard the same about the Lenovo line, but not the Thinkpad line.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

Do a Google search for "refurbished laptop". Should be lots of them available at a variety of price points. I have actually had better luck with refurbished computers than the ones I bought new.
One potential problem with older computers is that you probably will be getting an older operating system that is no longer supported by Microsoft and upgrading would cost more than getting a newer computer with that OS in the first place. The WiFi capabilities of older computers will also likely not be as good as more current models, not to mention that the older ones generally came with hard drives that are miniscule by today's standards.
Consumer Reports gave a repair history of several brands of laptops not too many months ago. IIRC, Dell laptops didn't do all that well on staying healthy, but Dell fixed them relatively promptly. I believe that Apple, Toshiba, and IBM (or their new name, which I can't remember) did pretty well and HP did almost as good. Many of the lesser brands were much worse.
Good luck.
I've had good luck getting re-furbished HP's on http://www.Ecost.com

I bought a new Compaq Presario about six months ago. The tech support, what few questions I've had, has been excellent.
I won't go into all the specs, it's pretty basic in today's market. Got it at http://www.compusa.com . They're very competitive and have weekly sales via Email.

besides ... I don't wanna like my computer experience that much ...
as in Mac ... not soft porn!
Mac's might make the world better ... but as I find myself limiting m y online time more and even more ... I'm back to hating these stinking evil boxes again.
