We need to a new Accounting system. We are General contractors, literally. We build custom homes, remodel, additions, light commercial, and do bonded work.
My bookkeeper wife is an Accountant. Her and another accountant set up a system in excel years ago. Which has worked fair. She purchased Quick books for contractors a few years ago and is not happy with it all. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Quickbooks is probably the most commonly used small business accounting program, and most accountants I know of prefer it. I've used it since '04 and - although it takes some learning - it does everything I need.
That said, I would steer way clear of Quickbooks Pro 2009. It came out in Oct '08 and from what I've read on the Intuit website forums, it's a total train wreck. I made the mistake of "upgrading" to '09 last Sunday and doing my year-end bookwork. After fighting with it for a couple of hours and (belatedly) reading the Intuit forums, I managed to get back to QB '07. It still took me several hours to get everything straightened out.
A Google search for "Small Business Accounting Software" will probably give you beaucoup choices.
Take a look at Sage Master Builder.
Microsoft has an accounting product "Microsoft Office Accounting"I believe it's a free download.http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/accounting/FX100518171033.aspx
I have used MYOB accounting software since about 1994 and wouldn't change anything.
Check out GNU Cash at http://www.gnucash.org/. If a free Open Source accounting program. They have versions that will run on Windows, Mac or Linux.
Under the NEWS heading look for: GnuCash 2.2.8 released, next paragraph down find Getting GnuCash
Click on: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=192 (Source code and Windows binary). You want the Windows binary. Its self-extracting. Go to:
Download or save:
Click on the link and follow the set-up instructions.
Hope this helps.
