NEED FLATHOOKS FOR STORM SASH

Dinosaur | Posted in General Discussion on October 6, 2005 02:30am

Does anybody know where I can get some flathooks for an old-fashioned storm sash? I need a pair for next week and can’t find any locally, dang it. The supplier I bought the last batch from can’t get them anymore.

Just in case ‘flathooks’ isn’t the name you know these by, they look like this:

Thanks. I'll check out True Value on the web and see if they ship to Canada. I'll need these for mid next week which is kinda tight for any kind of international shipping, tho....

Thanks. I'll check them out; True Value's website says they no longer sell on line.

I spoke to Ideal's manager here in Quebec yesterday. She said she's been with the company 28 years and didn't remember ever having seen these things.

She did a little research and then e-mailed back with the info that, going back as far as their 1969 catalogue, she couldn't find any item with that SK-22 catalogue number. That package of yours must be older than that.

Don't know what to tell ya, other than....we bought this joint in '88, had the new storms built and hung before the first winter, screens built & hung the following spring ('89). These packages (10 or so) are left over from those screens of ours. I've purchased many more of the same over the years for other storm/screen projects from the same cource (Menard's). Last ones maybe 5 years ago. If I get in there today (I just might)......I'll have a look/see.Knowledge is power, but only if applied in a timely fashion.

Kinda pointless for your current needs, but here's what I found today.Menard's no longer carries the Ideal brand of hanger. Didn't talk to anyone about it as that would likely prove futile anyway. The other main source for such things locally doesn't have any sash hangers at all. Used to, but no more. Here's what Menard's carries now. Might prove helpful to you sometime in the future, maybe not.Cheaper is better, right? I swear I can hear a little birdie singing. <G> Knowledge is power, but only if applied in a timely fashion.

Thanks again, man. I got a call from House of Antique Hardware in Oregon a bit earlier tonight; there's an extremely helpful woman there who's gonna try to get a pair of those things in an Xpressmail envelope for me before the PO closed out there for the long weekend. If she made it, they oughta be here Tuesday or Wednesday. Dan won't be here till Tuesday afternoon to start shooting photos, so for sure we won't need these things till Wed or Thursday.

All the info I garnered in this thread I'll collect for a sidebar on suppliers of sash hardware.

I was gonna say Van Dyck's, but I see Kate beat me to it.

If you don't have their catalog, its worth getting for a lot of restoration/oddball stuff.

  3. Pierre1 | Oct 06, 2005 03:40am | #6

Lee Valley Tools http://www.leevalley.com  has a similar product:

Flush Mount Clips, 2002/2003 catalog No. 00M85.01, $4.80 for 10 clips. They are described as:

...versatile interlocking hangers, 1/8" thick, used for hanging panels, cabinets, mirrors and displays, can also be used in applications where dismounting is necessary. Large size is 1 7/8" wide by 1.5" high; small is     1 9/16" wide by 5/8" high. Requires flathead screws.

I don't have their current hardware catalog, so my info is not current. But give them a call 1-800-267-8767 and they'll go out of their way to find what you need. Their mail-order service ships same or next day.

Or hang the storms with rare-earth magnets...

Lee Valley was one of the first places I thought about, but I searched their website with about 15 different keyword tries and came up dry. The ones you saw still exist, but they are designed for hanging something on a wall. The receiver hook has to be behind the panel being hung. I need a hook that is fastened to the head casing on the exterior trim, above the sash.

Any junk dealers, architectural warehouses, etc. that might resell old cottage storms in your area? Some longtime residents that recently upgraded their windows? The hardware would be used, but functional.http://costofwar.com/

Yeah, I could probably turn up some used storms at Les trouvailles if it came to that. But it'd be easier just to pull a set off one of my own windows. This is for an article I'm writing for FHB. Dan Morrison is coming up to shoot the build next week. We're supposed to start Tuesday.

I found a supplier through the AEC search site, but they're in the US, in Portland OR, IIRC. I don't think Taunton wants to pay FedEx charges of $30-odd bucks for $2.09 worth of hardware, LOL....

    Try here.....

    Ideal Security Inc.
    860 90th Avenue
    LaSalle, Quebec, Canada
    H8R 3A2
    Phone: 514-363-1030

    Fax: 514-363-7546
    800-361-3423
    e-mail: [email protected]

Most recent number I have on their storm hangers is SK22. That from a lingering package in a drawer that's probably 15 YO. I've got 36 sets of these on this Vic. 18 storms and 18 screens.

Ideal is a good possibility. They're not that far from here, so if they've still got them, they could slide a couple in an XpressPost envelope and I'd get them the next day.

I downloaded their catalog from the website but didn't see them, so I sent an inquiry by e-mail. I oughta know in the morning.

I would try Crown City Hardware. 626-794-0234 They are based in Pasadena CA. I am 95% sure they carry them although I dont have a catalog in front of me to be sure. I highly recomend getting the cattalog. It's a lot of fun to look through, they have a fantastic selection.

Looks like they have them:http://www.crowncityhardware.com/collections/screen/window/window.htmlThanks for the tip, I've been searching for the same thing. Stanley Hardware lists similar items, although they don't sell direct.http://www.stanleyhardware.com/default.asp?TYPE=CATEGORY&CATEGORY=HDW+SS+SASH+HARDWAREJohnTN

If you are considering the tilt-out application, get yourself a Blaine Hardware catalog. http://www.blainehardware.com . I just glanced at their site and it doesn't appear they have pictures on it but I have a catalog "somewhere" and I recall some that in my opinion have a better operation than the other ones posted here.

That Stanley link may do it; my local dealer can order Stanley, I think. If not, House of Antique Hdwr may be able to ship a couple of samples by FexEx.

I can't exactly remember, but I think the House of Hardware hangers are actually Stanley branded parts.
Seriously though, you should look into those adjuster arms. They really are cool. The hold the storm sashes out at a tilt and then when you close 'em, they pull the storm sash very tightly against the casing. When the storms are open, you can leave the windows open in the rain because the storms effectively act as awnings. You will be the envy of the block when everyone sees all your storms opened up in the spring.

Storm windows here all have vent holes with a flap or a sliding glass panel over a single screened lite. I think I have seen prop arms like the ones you found many years ago in NYC.
