I see you got this on the board. Nicely done-good on you for not giving up.
Have you investigated screening the floor? It's not nearly as invasive as a complete sanding.
The gouges you mention might scare me.
The gouges seems minor, a couple of cresent shaped marks from who-knows-what and a few scrapes. I was thinking about just using MinWax or something, but I feel that is just a quick fix. I will look into the screening and see what that yields.
screen the floor (essentially sanding it lightly with a fine grit to scuff the surface - the screens are abrasive) and add a good layer of finish - probably an oil based polyureathane. Done.
This is called a maintenance coat and is commonly done by professionals or diyers. Rather than a quick fix, it's just extending what finish is left and it looks better when you're done.
wood floors
I had a customer a couple years ago that would drive a considerable distance to buy a floor refresher made by Bona (they also make high quality hardwood floor finishes.) She swore by it; I've never used it. She also drank a bit.
