Need help quick.

DaveRicheson | Posted in Construction Techniques on January 26, 2009 11:59am

I’m looking for a weather proof cord connector. Someting that I can plug extension cords ends to together inside of, so moisture does not cause the attached GFCI pigtail to trip.

Think I’ve seen them somewhere, but am drawing a blank owhere and what they are called.

Snow and ice headed this way and we are trying to solve this problem  in a short time. We had issue with GFCI pigtails tripping durring the rements of Ike when it tore up our grid.

I tell ya, every one here is all a-twitter with this storm coming, they remember '03 when the big ice event crippled the area for days and days.

Just not used to it I guess, we always seemed to manage up in Pa. But here and in NC where I was, people freak out.

I feel real bad for the linemen, we had an outage here a few weeks back and it was the nastiest night of the season, the poor guys were out there in the bucket at 0300 and zero.

Nope , I'm a wuss. I don't leave the house without my thermals this time of year !!

Rain or snow are easy to handle but ice is a real tough nut !!

We had a bad one in 98 that people still remember very vividly.

            Good luck .

It's that global warming causing the freezing rain. It's not cold enough to make real snow.

Couple of Nancy's. I'm supposed to drive to Ashland tomorrow. I saw the boss when I got in this evening . He said we may cancel that trip because of the weather. (I've never heard him even acknowledge the weather before) If we do that he wants me to drive to Georgetown and work. He doesn't get the concept of icy roads.

He doesn't get the concept of icy roads.

The problem here in '03 wasn't the icy roads as much as it was downed powerlines and trees. I was trying to get to Lowes to be there in line to try and buy a generator on Sunday morning and a tree fell right behind me. Got a little further up the street and it was blocked. I had to drive up somebody's driveway and across their back yard and their neighbor's to get out. It was like being in a maze anywhere you tried to go.http://www.quittintime.com/      View Image

I won't be sharing your storm, just commiserating.Up here in Ann Arbor, it's flurries and 11 degrees forecast tonight. The accumulated plowed piles range up to 5-6', more than we usually see these last 20 years. But there's a serious mountain that I've got to climb where the U of M dumps the snow from the football stadium/basketball arena parking area. It's got to be 50' high! Don't know how they get the snow up to the top of the pile -- some sort of conveyor? Will take knucklehead son out for manly adventure -- full report to follow.Meanwhile, hang in there.Aargh!Aitchkay

Hopefully I won't be out there plugging things up for them. If we can get the ones slatemen found, I ll just make up the cords and send them out with the generators and trailors.

NWS is calling for us to get hammered. They say it could be worse than the ice storm that hit you all a few years ago.

Not looking forward to mor 16 hr. days like we did with the Ike storm. They did us all some cheesie #### ball caps for that one though <g> in addition to a nice fat paycheck with all the ot on it.

Dave, it looks to me like it's breaking up a little as it gets closer. I sure hope you don't get what we got in '03. I was without power for 11 days. Food was a little trickey for a few days, so load up on canned goods. We had no warning and weren't ready and suddenly there wasn't anywhere to buy food for about a week.

My boss called this morning about six and told everyone to stay home. That's a first. We're not that busy so we can make up what we get behind on pretty easy. I already had soup made for lunch so I poured it in the thermos and went back to bed. That's also a first. Usually when I'm up I stay up but I was tired this morning and decided to take advantage of it.

Wife works for Metro and when I gave her the news that I wasn't going to work, I added that she was forbidden by me to go to work also. Usually I have to give her a boot to the #### to get her up in the morning but she jumped up and had the TV on and was scoping the whole thing out. Full of chatter and excitement as I tried desperately to go back to sleep. Metro didn't close so she had to call her boss and use the "My husband forbids me" card on him.

You know it's bad when we close.

So far, it's not too bad here. The roads are slick, but the trees aren't loading up too bad yet. But, I think it's just getting started.http://www.quittintime.com/      View Image

Not a spec of snow here, but everything is iced over bad. I got the van stuck on the level gravel drive when I tried to move it from a nearby tree. Just spins on the glaze and won't crack through.

I'd say the ice is 3/4" thick on the ground.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

From what I'm hearing from our outage managment people wester Ky got hammered and it may hit us this evening. Looks to me like it is tracking a little south of us so Shere and seeyou could catch the worst of it.

This is getting a little rougher. I'm losing tree limbs at an alarming rate. Pretty much one whole tree in the front yard. The backyard where the power lines are is really losing limbs. None in the lines so far. I'm getting ready to go out and take a look. Sewer froze up I think, neighbors did it yesterday. I'm thinking it may be on the city side though. I'll look into that tomorrow.

The worst part is now the wife is freaking out like it's the storm of the century now. It's 10:30 at night! What am I gonna do about it now?

Good luck out there tonight. Watch your footing, we don't need you with a broke hip here all day recuperating. :)

They are keeping us on for the duration.

Afraid to let essential and some support personel go home because they may not get back .

LMAO at the two clowns I work with right now. Supervisor ask if two of us wanted to make a trip. They stepped right up, thinking they were going to run arounf locally doing something for him.( Heh, heh, heh,) Neither one had ever been in the service.   He sent thier azzes to Madisonville with a truck load of stuff for a WKE of KU service center.

What fun! Drive all night in this shid. that is after putting in the first 16 hours doing snow removal and the "panic" mantenace work the goes on durring these things.

USN taught me well. Never volunteer untill you know the scope of the job!

DW just called. Said they lost power while she was making her first pot of coffee at 4:00 am. She said the woods behind the house might be pretty in the light of day, but right now they sounded like horror movie. Limbs creaking, groaning and crashing under the weight of the accumulating ice.

Branch took out our cable about eleven. That took out the Internet. Using the iPhone now. We've got a huge ice logged branch drooping over our service drop. I expect it to go today sometime. Your wife is right about the sounds of the limbs. We had them dropping like mortars here all night. Everytime one would drop the dog would bolt out of bed. The wife would run from window to window trying to figure out where it came from. Power went out for a few minutes about three. That spurred a whole new panic. It came on a few minutes later. I told her for the hundreth time to leave me alone. I told her if that happens again throw all the blankets on the bed, close the bedroom door and snuggle up. We'll survive just fine. I then grabbed the dog, curled up and said. "Time to earn your keep my little furry buddy." Then I told the wife. "Best thing to do in an emergency is sleep it out." Those guys going to Madisonville are in for a long trip. Suckers. :)

I was all content and warm and fuzzy,, till I realized if the big maple goes in half and hits the house..WTF is that gonna do to the Chimney? Well being as I got a rip roaring fire in the stove, we'd be in serious caa-caa real quik.

Running thru my mind, flashlight first, then pants, get the dogs and cats out, shove Rosiee out the door while dialing 911 on whatever phone works..grab the "Holy Cr@p here it comes box" of important papers and nack up discs..arrghh. I did NOT sleep well.

This tree is coming down next, I can't take the chance any more, I had to let the HO ins. lapse when my customer went bellt up and caught me short..I need to re-insure I think.  We'd be fa-kacked if we took a big hit.

Friend told me he saw people fighting over kerosene. Everything is sold out at Lowes. HD, and Wallyworld

Betcha before this is over we will read about someone dying from CO2.

We haven't been off since 6:30 am Tuesday morning.

Gonna try to catch a couple winks tonight. I think we went to UPS battery discharge about 6-7 times last night. Never lost power or rolled to the generators, but every flicker got us up and running to check and reset alarms,

We have crews coming in from all over agian, but they are saying this is worse than IKE. Covers more area.

I'm on Shelby Energy Co-gp at home. Dw got the little generator running and stoked up the wood stove, so she is good for a few more days.

I'm kinda please with the way her kennel/studio did today. We keep the stat set at 50 degrees just for the dogs. Lost power atound 4:00 am this morning and when she fed dogs about 6:00 pm it was only down to 45. Gotta thank this site for all the ideas and knoweldge I cherry picked while building that building.

The people buying up all the hibachi portable grills had me concerned. They didn't look like they needed an open flame going in their houses. My nephew is a volunteer fireman he said they have been running ragged, mainly on downed trees in the road. He was in his way to third shift last night at UPS when I talked to him. He had heard them responding to a house fire on his radio. First one so far he said. I hope it's the last:

I emailed my sister and see called me back. They are in florida. But my 2 nieces and nephew in Middletown are all out of power. She said that he had a kerosene heater in the single nieces house. But she is going out of town for a dance recital for one of her kids. So he was winterizing it and moving the heater to someone elses house. My nephew had be Fire Chief in Middletown until last fall. He said that St Mathews had 3 fires yesterday.I suspect most where from improvised heating sources..

            Got 4 hrs. last night.

We sent a generator to Greenville, KY water company two days ago. It got there late and the crew couldn't finf anyone to let them hook it up. They finally got it installed and the plant running early today. But like Bill's post they are playing catch up now refilling towers.

We are suppose to getting another 800 crews in tommorow. All hotel rooms are filled throughout the areas. We got about 2000 rooms Tuesday, but that wasn't enough. A lot of people with out power have flooded into hotels, limiting waht is available to us. Renting or begging anyplace we can put these guys up. Even getting bunkroom trailors hauled in for several locations, but they are not here yet. There are nearly 400 crews sleeping in thier trucks tonight.

Feeding them is another issue outside of the metro area. We have started providing generators and hook ups for any business that can cater the food to them. One of our site coordinators got a Wal-Mart without power to open so he could clean out all the snack food still on the shelves.

Ike cost us $40 million. They won't even give an estimate of how much higher this one will go.

When I think of the conditions those guys are working in and the lack facilities to take care of them, it make what we are doing a cake walk.

Maybe the small window of warmer temps this weekend will help, but then they are calling for more snow Monday and Tuesday.

            On the other hand.

            Man is this stuff pretty!

Hope you, Sphere, or seeyou can gets some pics and post them.

Thanks. My bosses son in law works at one if the few if not the only large hotel that's taking pets. He says it's a literal zoo there. I can't post pics from my phone so I'll have to wait. I'm supposed to be going to Georgetown today. Later.

I gotta give this a bump and call out to anyone in GA and AL. There are many other states that have sent help, but i just came back from the staging area for Georgia Power and Alabama Power. Those guys are great. They rolled in here ready to rock. Self contained on everything except housing and food, even their own security (don't mess with Georgia Power -They have an armed security force that would rival some SWAT  units)

You guys try not to break anything while we have your crews up here. We are going to hang on to them for a week or two.

That's pretty cool about the security. Never heard of that before. I know after Ike they had a rough time getting power hooked back up in the projects where my wife works because of the residents harrasing the crews. I'm pretty proud of all the infastructure workers here. They have really done great. The road crews were outstanding. They got ahead of it and stayed ahead of it. I've never seem them do so well. Everyone has seized the worst of it and made the best of it. And all with a good attitude to. Man I got hit with an ice chunk the size of a cinder block today. It came off a traffic light in Georgetown. It hit the lower center part of my windshield. It shook the whole truck and sounded like a shotgun going off. Scared the bejeezus out of me and the guy that was riding with me. Do you have any idea when you are going to spend the night in your own bed?

Do you have any idea when you are going to spend the night in your own bed?

No. Our public information people make estimates for the media, but our trouble and storm response people tell us it is still too early to make a good call. I think my department will cut back on our hours when we get all the bumps ironed out of coordinating feeding, housing, laundry, etc for the 4,700 crews brought in (state wide). We thought we had all the steps to the dance down pat after Ike, but this sucker has taken it to a new level.

My guess is down to 16 hr days around Monday, then stay at that level for 8 to 10 more days. Could be wrong if the weather goes to heck on us Monday/Tuesday.

I got power back yesterday afternoon. My mom's is still off and several people who got there power back on fairly soon have lost it again. Couldn't remember who I've talked to and who I haven't. We're not getting much thawing yet. A little melt where the sun hits on the pavement, but I haven't seen a single drip off the icicles on the trees or seen any ice fall yet.http://www.quittintime.com/      View Image

Sun came out here today and got some melting started I think the high was around 30. My oldest brother came by and we dared and poked and teased each other until we finally got that limb that's been hanging on my service drop off. We cut it as much as we dared and it still took all I had in me to lift it enough to get it off. I'm not that close to losing power anymore.

I'm glad he came by. I wasn't in the mood to deal with all these trees. I just wanted to curl up on the couch and pretend they weren't there. He was in a hurry because he had a few paying customers to take care of too. So we just took care of the bad ones. Once I got into it I was liking it. Plus it got me away from the old lady who has been nothing but a huge pain since the first rain drop fell. My saw was cutting like #### so I finally deduced that the chain was shot and I went and bought a new one. I took down one whole tree in the front yard, and got everything up front cut up for hauling away. I pulled several limbs out of the ground that were in a foot deep! That's some velocity when they hit.

Yes, nothing more unnerving than the sound of trees or lines dropping in the dark night. Even when it warms and they are shedding just the ice that can keep you on edge.Years ago I had young puppy, maybe 3 to 4 months. Got him house broke and let him out to do his thing the morning after an ice store.Right in the middle a tree limb let go about 10 ft away from him.Scared him so much that it took another month before he would go out of the house without me.And that summer we had sewer construction and this big rock grinding machine. Every couple of hours they would lube it from a service truck with a power greese gun. And you would here a pssh for each shot. Even when it was 1/2 block a way he would jump every time he heard it..

The link slateman gave me is the one I was thinking of.

We have a couple of emergency trailors set up to haul to facilities around the state that may need our assistance if they loose power of have some type of structural damage. We used them durring the Ike storm remnent that blew through here last fall. The GFCI pigtails kept tripping from damp or wet connections at the plugs laying on the ground. Of course we also lost alomost all those GFCIs and cords when everyone pulled out after the restoral.

We bought out every 12 guage cord and GFCI pigtail at one of the Lowes yesterday. Then someone thought about last falls problems and realized the snow and ice would make it even worse, so I was ask how to fix it.

Came her for some help, cause I was in brain lock. Knew I had seen  them somewhere, but couldn't even remember what to call them for a web search.

We wanted something that did not involve making up new cord ends because no maintenance tech will go out with the trailors. Locals contractors will have to set them up as needed, so we had a KISS in mind.

I'm betting that if they go out, we won't get any of them back with even half of what left in them.

Not my concern though, I just ride the bus.

One of the good things about being on the power house/lineman side of the IBEW is the stability. Not as volital as the construction trades side. I did all that traveling and living out of town stuff when I was young non-union carpenter. I can't imagine having to do that agian as a senior.

I couldn't agree with you more Dave, the traveling part is a big PITA , aside from having a job someplace the only real positive is the reciprocity of benefits, it's all done with computers now so there is no need anymore to have to keep track of every single local you worked out of , it made life much simpler than keeping track of 20 or30 different locals and when you worked there.

http://www.kentucky.com/787 More than 607,000 without power in state's largest outage everThe ice storm that pounded Kentucky this week has now caused the state's largest power outage, surpassing the 600,000 customers who lost power after Hurricane Ike.http://www.kentucky.com/787/story/675865.html"Counties south of Lexington bore the brunt of the major winter storm Tuesday and early Wednesday, with some cities suffering widespread outages of both power and water service.Danville was one of the hardest-hit areas, with power and water knocked out virtually citywide.A generator was in place at Danville's water treatment plant, but residents were asked to conserve water over the next 36 hours so the city can fill its seven towers."If everybody uses water, we won't get them filled, and the water pressure will be horrible," City Clerk Donna Peek said from the city's emergency operations center. Residents are also advised to boil water used for cooking and drinking until they are notified that an advisory has been lifted.A second generator being trucked from Atlanta to power Danville's water treatment plant ran into a regulatory snafu. Peek said a truck carrying the generator was stopped for four hours at a weigh station near Knoxville because it lacked a heavy-load permit to bring the equipment through Tennessee. The truck finally got back on the road just before noon Wednesday, after Kentucky State Police called Tennessee authorities.Water was "trickling in" about 7 p.m., and officials were hoping that homes would at least have low water pressure by 8 p.m.""Madison County and the cities of Richmond and Berea also declared states of emergency, and the county's emergency management agency was requesting National Guard units to help with cleanup. Residents were urged to stay off roads because of downed trees.Shelters were opened on Richmond Road North in Berea and at Richmond's White Hall Elementary School. However, the school shelter had to close Wednesday afternoon when the power went off. People there were moved to the Begley Building at Eastern Kentucky University. A shelter was also opened at Shannon Johnson Elementary, 109 Oakwood Drive in Berea. Most of Berea was without power Tuesday afternoon. The power grid outage affected nearly all of Berea's 10,000 residents. Many were still without power Wednesday.Wednesday afternoon, about 150 people — mostly from Berea — had moved into an American Red Cross shelter set up at Church on the Rock on Richmond Road near the Berea city limits.
