I have to go through a flat roof with an 8″ pipe, for a range hood exhaust.
Location: California
Roofing material: foam
What does code require. Any links to code info on-line? Any back issue of FHB? Any pro to offer advice?
So far, I am thinking:
10″ hole.
Remove foam down to wood for the entire surface area of the flashing.
Put pipe into place. Secure to T&G roof with straps.
Put tar on bare wood. Slip flashing “thing” on pipe, with tar between “thing” and roof. Roofing nails on “thing”, to the T&G roof.
Sheet metal screws between pipe & “thing”, and pipe & cap.
Pour liquid foam onto “thing”, and make sure that it does not form ridges at joint between old and new foam. Paint with latex.
If you know better, I’d love to hear from you.
Thanks in advance.
PS: The “thing” is a 2′ X 2′ galvanized square sheet with an angled cone in the center. A.k.a: widget, thingamabob, or thingy… I just don’t know the real name. Shame on me. 😉

Pipe Collar or pipe flange or roof boot would do. As for your fix, you need to find a compatable sealant for your foam roof. Tar may counter act with the foam roof in a negative way. Find out what type of roof it is and ask the manufacture. In theory your idea sounds good but I have not had the chance to even see this type of roofing and I have seen them all. "Or so I thought"
*Thanks Ron! I haven't thought about the reaction between the tar and the foam stuff. Good idea to check!
