Pro,
Just a few things I am curious about.
What type of nails do You use for framing your PT decks?
Hot dipped and nail by hand?
Electro-galv. Gun nails?
What is your preferred method for fastening 5/4 PT decking?
McFeelys?
Ring shank?
Ordering out a fair size deck tomorrow. Got curious about how the master does it.
Do you know how Jim Blodgett doe his decks 🙂
Thanx

Mr T - I used Steelhead hot dipped galvanized 3 1/4" for framing with Hitachi guns and Steelhead screw shank hot dipped galvanized for decking with Bostich coil nail guns.
I've never laid 5/4 treated. I usually deck with 5/4 tight knot cedar.
Now Jim Blodgett screws around on his deck but I don't remember how he fastened it :-)

Bob,
Are Steelhead nails a readily available brand name?

What's your favorite clear and semi transparent preservative/stain for your cedar decks?
Thanks,
Mike S

That would be Superdeck transparent stain. The reason I like it best is that it applies, cleans and re- applies better than any others I have used over the years. My deck is 8 years old and it looks like I built it yesterday. I clean and stain it every year. Bob

Thanks Bob
I've tried Cabots and the strong odor seemed to linger for quite a while, perhaps I applied it wrong. Considered Penofin. Looked at Superdeck and noticed if I recall correctly that it has tung and linseed oil, it looked promising.

Mike- Cabots and Behr rate about the same and you better have a respirator to put on penofin if you think Cabots stinks. The problems with some of these other stains is the re-application the following year. They have some kind of waxy substance for waterproofing that is very hard to re-apply over , where a true oil will soak in year after year.
I hope I'm explaining this so you understand, I'm not a chemist, I just know what works.Bob

Bob, You're essplainnn it fine by me. Yep, Cabots was waxy. By the way it appears that HD is dropping Behrs "Natural Seal Plus" line of oil based stains around here. Seems like they're going the alykd/acrylic route, my guess is the EPA has something to do with it.
Thanks againMike

Thanks for the photo.
Nice touch with the heartwood and sapwood on the bench!.
How long does SuperDeck have to dry before it's o.k. to sit on it without the stain staining clothes?

Bob,
When you "clean" your deck do you mean scrub it and let it dry or do you use a type of cleaner prior to the refinish?
Thanks,
CS
CS,
Just finished cleaning my deck yesterday (15 x 50 cedar). I rented a 2000psi power washer for $35 and had the deck done in about an hour and a half. No chemicals needed and it couldnt be cleaner or easier to do. I then sealed it with an oil finish from a garden sprayer and it looks betterrrrrr then new.
Be well

CS- this is what I use. It costs $8.97 at Lowes. One gallon makes 2
A pressure washer is too abrasive on a cedar deck and it lifts the grain which makes it trap more dirt.
I do scrub lightly with a deck brush on a pole after I've sprayed to loosen real dirty areas.
looks like new when I'm doneBob

I use an electrogalvannized "trim nails" (3") that is coated with a glue that heats up and melts as I shoot it through my gun. The gun automatically counter sinks the heads and looks fantastic not seeing a gazillion giant nails heads. I've been doing this for over 15 years and no call backs......just referals.
