Best to you and yours, Chris.
Some say I know too much.
Any details on the hand rail you have in mind? Balusters? Standard rail on sheetrock? oak?
Ash to match what's there now, following the inside turn of the stairs. There are existing newel posts that can support the new railing, but the new railing must be continuous, so it has to hung on the side of the newels and wrap around them as the stairs ascend. Railing cannot go over the top of the newels as they have decorative tops that I want to preserve.
I am working to laminate such a railing, as I was not able to find anyone in a timely manner who wanted to work on this project. If that effort craps out, then I may still be looking for help.

Hey Bob, I was just curious... how did your railing turn out? did you do it yourself? or were you able to find someone?
" If I were a carpenter"
Well, both actually.
I did find a local person who would have been able to do it, but not at the cost that I wanted, so I laminate the thing out of 1/16" slices of ash. In retrospect, he probably had it priced about right! It takes a LONF time to laminate <grin>
Bob
Not to mention a whole bunch of clamps!!!
did you post any pictures?
