Need website tweaking

PaulBinCT | Posted in Business on May 31, 2006 03:27am

I put up my own website using Frontpage, and I’m 75% pleased with it, but looking to hire someone to tweak it.  I’d like to put in some metatags (I tried but don’t think I did it properly), as well as do a better job with the frames than I did, also I have better res photos to replace what’s there… a few other odds and ends.  Any experienced Frontpagers looking to make a few bucks? TIA

You don't see 3 buttons at the bottom?  Bizarre... I have no clue why that would be.

Hey Paul, I dont have a bunch of experience. But, I created our site using FP2003. I am now on the 3rd revision of the site. Its a constant work in progress.

I usually get some good healthy criticism from the guys on here.

You can check it out at http://www.gettum.com

Be ware, I am updating and adding some content, so you might find it lacking.  Since we do design/build, im adding a faq page and some more info about the design/build concept.

If there is anything I can help you with, let me know (aka free advice)

      Thanks JG...

My main issue is that I can't seem to be able to get the "frame" setting correct so that the photos appear properly centered on different screen sizes.  That and the metatag thing that I thoughttttttttttt I did, but doesn't seem to help getting me on the search engines. Any advice (free or paid ;) ) is welcome...

      1. jg | May 31, 2006 04:03pm | #10

Let me go back and look at it again.

I may be able to import it into my frontpage for clarity.

If I understand your problem, your pictures, content, etc. places differently in different resolution settings?

You may want to design your site using 800x600 so the people using 1024.x768 will still be able to see it (albeit smaller)

What I did was redirect based on resolution:

        800x600 is here: http://www.gettum.com/800x600

        1024x768 is here http://www.gettum.com/1024x768

To the user, it is seamless

Regarding the buttons, yea, using the fprollover function will not display correctly in firefox.

You may want to get rid of anything that uses a java applet

I had that trouble in the past

"... but doesn't seem to help getting me on the search engines. Any advice (free or paid ;) ) is welcome..."

That's the tricky but fun part. It's a shame some of the messages on this board go into oblivion. We had a good discussion a few months back on this subject. You won't get anywhere with this..

          <title>Welcome to</title>

It's best to use the most desciptive title that relefects the nature of your business...and in your case, location. Forget meta tags. The title tag that is the single most important aspect of any website if you want to be seen by search engines. It's also advisable to get a link from an actively crawled website out there. Jq could probably give you one on his links page, but make it a clickable text link and not an image link...there's a difference.

          Good luck:)

"To the user, it is seamless"Not exactly.I run 1280 x 1024.You want to change the logic to 1024x768 and HIGHER.

          1. jg | May 31, 2006 05:37pm | #16

            Bill,

your right, i dont think i changed the script. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Ill see what I can do to correct.

          2. jg | May 31, 2006 05:58pm | #17

            Bill,

Wow what a helluva resolution you use ! Anyways, I changed my monitors resolution to your resolution to check out what the 1024x768 site looks like. It still looks too small. Not sure I want to take the time to convert to yet a 3rd resolution.

Sure is hard to please everyone. I know right now, most sites are either 800x600 or 1024x768 but everything I have read point toward the standard resolution increasing.

Too bad things wont auto resize. At least I havent found a way to do it.

            Any suggestions.

I wasn't suggesting that you put in a 3rd resolution. But instead of just putting up an "error message" to go ahead and automatically redirect to the 1024x768 version.

At risk of sounding like (more of a ) dope... is all that multi res stuff necessary?  Why is it I can go to a "big time" site like AOH*LL or MSN and the home page looks good regardless of what I'm using... or have I just been lucky?

          5. jg | May 31, 2006 06:32pm | #22

You know, i am not sure how they do it. Your right though...it always looks good no matter what. I wonder how they do that

            Hey thanks !

I saw something similar to this a few months back. I thought I had read a few articles a while back on some other sites talking about resolution trends and changes.

          8. jg | May 31, 2006 06:32pm | #21

Thanks Bill. No I understand exactly what your saying now. Anything higher than 1024x768 should redirect to 1024x768.

To all, sorry ....wasnt meaning to hijack.

      2. jg | May 31, 2006 04:32pm | #12

        Hey Paul,

One more thing on the frame sizing you may try....

Try to create a "main" table (borderless) to mark the width and height you want, them put all the content in there. I think thats called a nested table?

That will keep your content centered.

I think in frontpage2003 its called a layout table. It allows precise sizing of the table and the content within.

Hope thats not too vaque..Good luck.

Thanks JG, that's my main gripe.  A friend commented "it doesn't look like you...too imprecise" ;) I'll try to look that up in my "FP for Dummies"

Paul, let me know how things go.

  3. torn | May 31, 2006 05:01pm | #13

    Paul,

I might be interested, depending on the scope of the work; send me a PM with some additional details of the kind of "tweaks" you want, and I'll be able to tell you for sure.

Also, once it's done to your satisfaction, are you looking to maintain it yourself, or are you looking for someone to maintain/update it for you?
