I am about to set out on coping a big bunch of baseboard, and want to replace my crappy old jigsaw with something more appropriate. What does anyone recommend, please?

Bosch 1587 or something like that. You'll have to buy the foot from Collins tools.

Go to the website for the Collins coping foot first (Google it).... that's where you'll find the list of jigsaws that the coping foot will actually fit. Also follow Dave's directions TO THE LETTER or you'll have a tough time figuring out how to use it. If nothing else, definately buy the Bosch blade he specifically recomends or you'll be standing there wondering what all the hype was about thinking your new coping foot is garbage. Gotta follow the directions or the coping foot is worthless.
I've never used the collins foot, is it worth it? Just on a 1 to 10 what would people rate it. How clean does it make the cope, ease of use, speed, etc. Thx
Follow the directions and it's a 10. Don't follow the directions (like most people) and it's a 6 at best. If you make the little jig (takes about 5 minutes and 35cents worth of scrap), and buy the right blades, the coping foot is awesome. It's cheap and gives excellent results with most every profile. Faster, easier, and a better finished product than a coping saw.
What makes it better than coping with the standard base? I cope all the time with a jigsaw, but that weird foot looks like something else I'd just have to change out when I did any other kind of cutting. Also, does it leave marks on the wood when cutting from the face side?...I like better, I just don't like giving myself new pains in the butt<G> Don't worry, we can fix that later!
Better control IMHO using the collins base vs the regular base. The shape of the Collins foot allows for better contact betweent the base and the stock.... less chatter, smoother cut. You still cut from the back side with the foot.
