We had a serious wind event not so long ago. Sadly, I was told this AM that one of my installs went belly up. I feared the worse..I dread eating a job.
Well, this was a chimney cap that was fastidiuosly crafted by Grant in his shop..I mean he made it like a tank..IIRC it weighs in at 100 plus lbs. of copper. All nicely riveted, and such…
about 46×92 “
Log home/add a creek valley/ add a copper sail..it failed.
The copper failed..no kiddin. The 1/8th x 1” strapping BROKE…clean as a whistle. It broke.
Yall send a beer to Gman tonite..he needs it.
Send me a elixer of sweet tea and Hawiian punch, cuz we installed that from the boom lift, now it will be from a ladder to rehook the next design.

I wonder if that tree branch had anything to do with getting the destruction started ?

And all.
Not my finances per se. I installed it,with Dale. We had a hinky feeling that no matter what...it'd find a good wind and go "poof".
I don't care who you are, how good you are...when it comes to Mama Nature, we get humble, right quick.
The suckkymost part is we had the boom lift out there for the intstall, now we get to reattach a new design off a ladder (S) or the mossy wood shakes.
I have never seen metal fatigue like that in all my yrs..This one was a freak.
I guess the wind got it a whupping up and down, and fractured the struts. Hindsight is 20/20.
Grant has a plan...so we be OK...but jeeepers....I have a new respect for wind.

Man that sucks, be careful the second time around. I went sliding off a roof with mossy shakes. I was probably doing 30 mph by the time I got to the eave of the house.
respect for wind thats why we use tires in New Mexico to hold our roofs on and tether our kids in the yard
:-)Daniel
That sucks.
I hate doing things twice, especially when they were done properly the first time.
But I guess you can't fight Mother Nature.
Statement and a question.
Its insurance .
How much for that one ? Imm gonna have to have one like that sorta.

All of my contracts have 'an act of God' or 'act of nature' clause. I have found one approach that is better than advertizing 'fix it and forget aout it'. Your customer's neighbors have seen the damage and find out it was repaired no charge. You will get more work by word of mouth. If you make an insurance claim your rates will go up.Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Seriously, look for scars on that branch.Any winds strong enough to tear that copper apart, would be strong enough to whip that branch and start the destruction on the copper.

What's up with the flashing onthe chimney? Seems like a pretty penny for the cap and not great flashing. Also, the branch MUST go. That sucker is way too close to that much $.
Sphere, You gotta have Stan Foster explain the power and force of aerodynamics...have you ever sat on the wing seat of a jumbo jet(250 tons) and witnessed airfoils doing their thing. These are powerful forces that create huge stresses. That was a freak wind I had some crawl space vents blown into the yard. stinky
Howdy neighbor.
That same wind took of my fascia and sailed it up towards your house.
Crap..I am late ..gotta run.

The wood roof shingles look a million years old but they are none the worse for wear. Maybe the moss is holding them together.
Do you have a pic of when it was new?

No, I wish I did. It was real pretty.
Grant did a helluva job making it in the shop. I mean it was sweet....but the failure of the material was never a thought for me. I was afraid when he told me it was wadded up, that I had somehow not fastened it properly...as you can see, it stayed up there, it just transmorgafied itself into a bunch of scrap.
What really hurts, is the HO is a putz that forstalled payment on all the work we did for an inordament amount of time...I mean dragging his feet for way too long...Niether of us really wanted to ever go back and do anything more for him, cuz he is a nice enough fellow, but his quirkiness and lethargy in payment makes for a bad relationship.
Here I sit on a beautiful day, while my trans in the van gets overhauled. I had a flush yesterday, and this am it was stuck in 2nd gear....Like I need a 900.00$ fix the week before XMAS..oh well, I can fart around in the shop and hang out here.
I installed a TV in the shop and my LT is now an intregal part of the dust as well...kinda cool. Now I wanna get a simple CAD program on the LT...cuz I keep losing my pencils. LOL
Life is good.

Here's a pic from my office window. The building shown is the federal courthouse in Richmond, and they scaffolded the whole thing about 4 weeks ago. Today I see that they are installing some kind of copper fascia. I'd like to walk over and climb the scaffold stairs for a closer look, but I think someone might object. The pic is from my cell phone so it's not the best.

Just take your pad and pen and put on a hard hat and go on up looking all official. Maybe even put a name tag on.
Yeah, they'll think he is OSHA and all act real professional like, then realize he is just a standard schmo gawking at the work, and tosss him off the roof..LOL ( at least thats what we do)

Neat!
Uh, how do you get the pic from the cell phone to your 'puter?
I have a verizon phone besides my nextel, but I don't have something that makes that possible...any help?

Well the first answer got lost somewhere.
I just send the picture to my email address, then open and save-as. It helps to have already created your email address as a contact so you don't have to type the whole thing every time. I have a LG brand phone through Verizon.
I just learned how to go the other way. I can take a pic with a digital camera, upload to the computer, then send it to my phone for use as a wllpaper. I send it to <cell phone number>@vzwpix dot com and then use the phone tools to display it. Here's my current wallpaper:

Is the building in the backgroud the VA state capitol building?
Jon Blakemore RappahannockINC.com Fredericksburg, VA
Yes it is. What you are seeing is the final 3-4 months of a $99 million renovation.
