Well, my carpenters rig is getting pretty shot. I’ve been abusing her for about 10 years now.
I use the man-made nylon type but today I spent 30 minutes in the tool shop looking for a new rig. I couldn’t decide so I just gave up and left.
What r your suggestions for a new set of bags? Manufacturers? Leather vs ballistic nylon?
I definitely want a WIDE belt – my back just isn’t what it used to be.
And unlike some guys… i really love to load my bags! i dont mind carrying extra weight around just so i can have everything i need.
I am a framer / log builder / general carpenter. I always carry paw / titanium -w- wood / speed sq / loose 16s & 8s and screws / sticks of 8s & 16s / chalkbox / fat max / several nail sets / 1200 pencils / markers etc.
Thankya

LOL! Sounds just like me.....I went through that a good half dozen times, before my bags couldn`t go any further. I ended up comprimising on a belt. I hate the damned thing. Had it about five years now. I only keep it because I don`t wanna go stare at other belts for hours on end without ever making a purchase!
Good luck.

I've been getting along pretty well with a leather framers rig...It's one large pouch with several compartments, attached to my belt with just a top loop which allows me to slide it back and forth depending on my position.
The dual pouches in the front of my old rig always seemed to dump half their load every time I would kneel down to work.
I have a nylon rig, that I have had for about 4 years. It is okay but would like it better if it where laid out differrent. I have seen some nice oil tan leather bags I like.
Now I trying to abuse it a little so I have a excuse to go buy another set I probably won't really like. Nail bags are kind of like buying boots, comfort is more of an issue for me than price. Take your time and get what you like and fits you.
These are the ones I love.

I have Oxy leathers but am leaning towards the Oxy blacks. The greens are good but the blacks have the capabillity for suspenders. My bags aren't the reason my belt fails, it's the belt itself. I can run these bags for ten plus years of hard 7 day a week work but the rivets in the belt let go because I have no a@@ to keep my belt or pants up.

I have a pair of Occi nylon

They carry everything I would want.
The nylon took a little while to soften up, but so does leather.
I had the Oxy framer bags with padded shoulder suspension and found that the bags didn't ride on my hips quite right. I kept the right bag but swapped two smaller trimmer bags for the big left bag and now it's almost perfect for me.
I've got ProPouch leathers. Very nice, thick, buttery-soft leather that's amazingly tough even so. They're about 10 years old and only now are they starting to show serious wear in the corners. I carry almost exactly the same stuff you mentioned, plus when roofing I hang an HT-65 off one of the hammer loops so they get pretty well loaded....

A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship...
But it is not this day.
FWIW--I have had a set of Ballistic nylon for years now and they have held up great. My set came with a wide back belt for my back--gets a liitle toasty under the belt in the summer but I can live with that for the extra support.
I too have looked at others and can't decide--figure I would start now and in another five years when they totally fall apart I might have it narrowed down to 3 or 4 .
The only complaint I have about my particule set is that the pouches are not all that big--on the plus side it keeps me from carrying way to much crap around.

Talk about carring it ALL. A little hot being all black, but so far, I am impressed.

Interested what yo think of that oxy tool chest. Does it stay tight to your body when you move around? How does it perform on a roof bending over and kneeling down? I would love to not have a 3" wide belt sticking into my sides.
Works out well, pockets don't dump ( we are climbing ALL day), and adjustable to be as tite as you want it.
The ONLY draw back is the shoulder harness is all padded and black, my old set up was just 2" suspenders, under this rig I sweat a lot more, due to less open air.
Soon, it will much cooler, and it won't be an issue. Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Do you have a pic or a link to that one?
If its what I think it is, I am wondering how they feel to work overhead. The straps/harness looks wide enough to be a nuisance if you are reacihing up a lot.
I am almost ready to get a set of Oxys. Thought I had decided what to get until I read your post.
Whatever it was.................I didnt do it.

Here ya go.
I did a test yesterday, reached overhead as you suggested.
Totally free, no binding or anything. I will say, you really have to adjust it your arm length, them pockets seem really far away at first.
Being on a copper roof, I like the abscence of too much exposed metal hoops, they gall it when ya lay on the roof.
Buy one, try it out..if it sux return it.

More questions for ya.
Doesnt the tool pouches right up close by yer ribs pizz you off? Hard to get tools in an out that high up........?
I assume it be made outa nylon. Doesnt it get sorta sweaty?
What the difference between the beltless leather system and this one. ( other than one made of leather )?
With the beltless or toolchest set up, how come the bags dont flap about on the ends of the suspender thingumies?
I been wanting the framer 4 bag rig with suspenders. Then started thinking bout the padded spenders. Dunno bout the hot an sweaty factor though. Summer soming up, winter has been a bust so far. several days lately hit 20 degrees. weird.........
As for sending them back after a wee test. I live way down the bottom of the planet. Not like I can hop round the corner to return them. It just gets long winded and time consuming to do it. Would rather make a pick once.
As it is I hafta get someone over there to buy and send. Bobstools dont ship to here for some reason.
Whatever it was.................I didnt do it.
Howdy.
"Doesnt the tool pouches right up close by yer ribs pizz you off? Hard to get tools in an out that high up........?"
The upper most ones are kinda odd, not BAD or anything, just odd. Remember, I am toteing a whole different set of tools than most, and very few fastners. Poprivets, roofing nails ( loose) and some 1.5" deck screws mostly. 2 paddle jaw vice grips, 2 welding type vice grips,1 pr neeedle nose grips and copper prep tool, mini flat bar, tape, square, hammer, 3 pr. of snips and marking/cutting knife, and a sharpie. Oh. and a riveter and an impact driver with hex shank bits and drivers.
No matter WHERE those tools would be, it can pizz you off on a 12/12 roof.
"I assume it be made outa nylon. Doesnt it get sorta sweaty?"
Everything is sweaty, no kidding. Tools rust over the weekend, snips last a few weeks at most.
"What the difference between the beltless leather system and this one. ( other than one made of leather )?"
I don't know
"With the beltless or toolchest set up, how come the bags dont flap about on the ends of the suspender thingumies?"
Gravity I guess. They aint too bad, but some positions and a serious sudden descent they will tend to be air brakes.
You just have to get used to them, mine are still a tad stiff from being new. So, far tho' I like it. Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
For what it's worth, I've been very happy with my Oxy Lights bags...comfortable, versatile, strudy, generally worth every penny.

well, I just went and bought some oxy's.I got the wide sheepskin belt (thought it would be softer, but the whole belt is covered up with pouches - so what's the point?!)The place where I got the bags sold everything seperately, and they had a limited selection. I got one ballistic pouch that i really like, (except for no speed square slot??!!!) but the leather pouch is way to small and stiff - cant even put a pencil in the small slots without breaking the lead off. Seems like an electricians pouch. So I will be getting another large pouch for my right side and keeping the small pouch for another belt - like when i'm doing trim n such. Thanks for the opinions fellas.
Sorry I'm late.
Glad you made a choice....I hate that feeling on indecision.
For the rest of you, here is the best one I know of. Made in MA, by hand, by an old carpenter. Yep, they are just right. You can have many pouches.
Oh yea, the company is TASK Corp. View Image

I too, concider myself too lazy to walk to the truck to get another tool. So I carry mine in my belt. I do not remember the brand name but it is black nylon. I went ahead an purched the eletricians belt. It has a pocket for every tool and then some! I have used mine for 7 years or so and the only sign of wear is where the claw of my hammer (I am a southpaw) rubbed on the pocket before I bought a seperate hammer ring.
I use the CLC proLVL and prefer it because it has handles to carry it with. Before I had a Dewalt set and it worked very good as well (both are cordura) but it didn't have the handles). We do quite a bit of remodeling and roofing and the handles make it nice because I generally don't wear it all the time (to prevent scraping walls when working inside finished houses). My helper has a set of Dead On bags that are older than the hills but he won't get a new set because it takes a while to get them broken in.
