New craft paper under old, stucco home

I’m replacing a window on my stucco home, and need to slide additional felt paper underneath the old paper in the wall behind existing stucco, since my new window is smaller than the old one. I read an excellent tip in Fine Homebuilding several years ago, possibly in the breaktime section, about how to ease new felt/craft paper underneath the old without breaking the existing stucco. Any ideas on 1) which issue that tip might be in, or 2) any suggestions for accomplishing this feat? I believe the tip was in an issue in 2002 or 2003.
Thanks,
Andy

First, don't try to slide tar paper under the old stucco...it's not stiff enough and will catch on every little snag. Instead get some 6" wide galvanized roll flashing, cut it to the desired lengths, and slide it behind the stucco. It is thin and stiff, and if you need more width you can overlay it in the open area with some tar paper.
Take this oportunity to slide drip cap flashing up under the stucco above the window, I'll post some pics of it getting done right...
AverageJoe,
Thanks for the pictures. Our house was built in 1913, and the paper behind the stucco is extremely thin or non-existent in some places. I think they used newspaper instead of felt paper in one place -- it's light brown, pock-marked and transparent. In any case, I'm tearing out the stucco until I find a suitable felt paper, which could be a long project. I'll consider using galv. metal at that point, but will probably stick with felt. My biggest concern is damaging the fragile paper that exists as I tear out stucco.
I've done this once before. The previous owners, and the owners before them, should be jailed for what they did to this fine old house.
