New exterior door where a window used to be
I realize I am going to have to check with building codes here locally and have asked a structural engineer friend for his assistance, but question please…I have a large 72″ x 80″ window which I am planning to have removed and replaced with patio doors. I assume there is a header over the window since it is an exterior wall, but the top of the window is much higher than the top of the patio doors. So my question is: would it be proper when framing in for the new patio doors for there to be a header directly over the doors, or will the existing header which is currently over the window be sufficient?

If it is of the proper size and supported at either end sufficiently, then yes-you can build down to the height required for you door.
Equally important-follow best practices for the installation-detailing to keep out water is something many installers miss badly.
Yep, should definitely be doable. You do need to be careful to solidly anchor the framed-down header so that it can't possibly work loose with door movement or in a windstorm.
