new finish nailers?

ez1980 | Posted in Tools for Home Building on April 14, 2007 02:05am

My old Paslode finish nailer crapped out, and it appears that the cost of repair is close to the cost of a new one.  I looked at a porter cable da250, and liked it, particularly the easy depth gauge.  It is a 15 gauge nailer, slant.  Any thoughts about it, or other nailers?

If you liked the Paslode (cordless?), they have a factory store on ebay where they sell reconditioned products. I picked up a brand new angle finish nailer for $200, goes for $359 at HD and the only flaw was a scratch on the handle.

They DON'T carry the same warrantee if that's important to you.

Norm,I've seen that seller (Paslode Outlet) before and wondered how legit it was. You commented about the warranty (or lack of), and when I read through the entire listing, I found that they only offer 14 days? Did that worry you at all, or not? I don't mind getting a refurb tool, but they could offer a longer warranty, 30, 90 days, etc. For example, if you buy a refurb on Amazon from CPO-Bosch, you get a full (same as new) warranty from Bosch (or at least that's the claim). By the way, how do you like that gun? I've wanted one for awhile, mostly for touch up work, a couple sills, or casements here and there, where it takes longer to drag out the compressor, hoses, gun, etc than it takes to actually install the trim piece...lol I've just had a difficult time forking out $300-350 for the gun..so far considering it would mostly be used...here and there.

As fars as I know the Paslode outlet is legit. All the email came from a paslode.com address and the UPS shipping info had Paslode as the sender.

I bought the Paslode straight finish nailer and the framer (both cordless) as refurbs - but from HD - about 6-7 years ago and they're both still working fine as long as I keep them reasonably clean and oiled. There's not a whole lot that can wrong with them. They're easy enough to rebuild yourself and parts are available thru Paslode but yeah, the lack of warrantee is BS since they're coming from the factory.

I find most of the Bosch-CPO refurbs aren't priced that much below retail, maybe that's why they offer the full warrantee.

The angle nailer is nice, you can get into the corners where the straight nailer just can't go. I've wanted one for awhile but dropping $300+ for an occasional use tool always held me back, especially since I've had the straight nailer (not sure why, I've spent more on other stuff that rarely gets used!).

There was another guy on ebay who had several Paslodes, maybe 10-12, all brand new and in the box for $260ea...I'm guessing they're probably warm to the touch.

Thanks for the info regarding their outlet. As far as the "warm to the touch" comment... yeah, I've seen so many deals on Ebay from guys selling tools at 20-30% cheaper than the big box stores on a regular basis..it does make you wonder "where" does he get these from that he can beat a company that buys these by the truckload??I mean seriously...the ONLY way you could beat a Home Depot by THAT much is if: 1) It's a one time thing as in you're selling something you don't need, going out of business, a gift, promotional item, etc... or 2) You've got some stolen merchandise. And when I see someone selling 5 or 10 of these things....hmmmm....well I tend to think it's reason # 2By the way, will that Paslode Angled finish gun run any other brand nails, or does it need Paslode nails? Just curious since we use Sencos now or if I'd have to go with a different nail set up also. Thanks

          >I find most of the Bosch-CPO refurbs aren't priced that much below retail, maybe that's why >they offer the full warrantee.Actually, on the corldless tools - the Bosch CPO refurbs offer only a 1 year warranty, whereas the new cordless stuff has a 3 year provantage warranty which is great and even offers the ability to buy brand as many new batteries as you'd like at half price through the 3rd year - regardless of the condition of your existing ones. That's worth a few bucks more in my book.I personally wouldn't buy any of the Paslode cordless nailers with anything less than a 90 day warranty...JT

I've used the Porter Cable and don't like it.  It recoils more than other guns, there's something funky about the tip, and it just feels kinda cheap.

I like my Senco SFN40.  I don't know if they make it anymore.  The newer version is ok too.

I think Hitachi and Bostitch are the most popular 15ga guns and for good reasons.

The Hitachi has a "blower" feature for dusting stuff off...kinda cool. The Bostitch is really light. Both seem well balanced and well made. The Dewalt is also worth a look.

Here is a handy comparison/summary...plenty of choices:

Edit to add: That list is a few years old and Rigid and Milwaukee should be added to the list (they are the same gun in orange or red). Go with the Red one if you want to avoid HD.

I have the cordless Dewalt that runs on only a battery. I love it , no gas cart. and the nails are cheap. I will never pick up another gun. I also like the depth gauge from 1 to 5 it sets the nail perfect every time. Unclogging jambs is a snap. It only jambs when you try to use all the little pieces of the racks when you get down to the last few nails in a box. th eguns a little bigger but it suits me just fine.
