this problem deals with a transition from a dressing foyer, seperated by a pocket door, into a thoroughly new bath area. The floor of this area is changing from carpet to marble tile (?), and the new thickness of the cement backer, heating element and tile is 1 1/8″, according to data from the contractor doing the tile. I am responsible for framing the new walls, openings etc… and I brought up the difference in flooring thickness. Carpet with pad = 3/4″, so the best case scenario, if his installation is perfectly flat, is a 3/8 bump. I thought about and suggested removing 1/2″ from the thickness of the joist in the area, but have had second thoughts in the last day. I would have to do a really superb job to keep level, and finish the planing right out the walls on all four sides.
new idea, tell me your thoughts. Remove sub, and replace with 3/8 ply, of very good quality. Add 2×4 blocking, upright, on 12″ centers, in all joist bays where possible, extending under walls to adjacent joist. I’ll get this toe-nailing on the joist under the walls with a palm nailer. Might not save any time, but what I’m after is a really flat floor, that is structural, and finishes the same height.
