I would like some opinions on different siding materials. We are building a new home in southeast Missouri, and have been trying to decide on siding materials. Basement walls are being poured now, so we have a little time, but not lots. Can’t really make ourselves like vinyl, would like to hear more about pros/cons of: Hardi-plank, Smart Lap, or Smart Lap II, or should we stick to good old cedar? Any comments are welcome…thanks!

I think you should definately consider steel. Each material has its own strengthes and weakness. Steel is the strongest material for home building and with new surface treatments is resistant to corrosion whish is what I think may be its downside. Good Luck.

There is a Hardi post a little below this. I've never used it, but many on this site are very satisfied with it.
I'm pro-cedar myself.
Have you searched the archives? Some content has been dumped during board crashes, but siding is a very popular subject, you may find some old posts buried there.
I've neither seen Smart Lap written about nor have I used it myself.
*Mahogany. Clear grade is currently running 8 to 10 cents less/foot than the same grade in Cedar. Dip in stain, and wet-lap all cuts. Apply over felt with furring strips. Should outlast Vinyl.
*Lauri,My wife and I are starting a house in Jonesboro, AR in a couple of months and dealing with the same issue. Yards in the area are selling a lot of Hardi-plank for upscale houses and we are leaning that way. IWe were at a home show recently and looked at steel siding. Impressive stuff. Not sure I am as sold as Savoy but it is something you should consider.Good luck!!Steve
