Seems the old 1 3/4 inch hole is too small for newer locks. The home store cannot supply this size so I guess I’m stuck with making the hole larger. I’m wondering if anyone provide suggestions for doing this properly. Obviously the hold should be perpindicular to the door and that may pose some difficulty. I presume I need to drill a template to use as a guide. Any suggestions would be great.

yes, you should drill out a pc of plywood-3/4 thick is best. put center lines on the template, register it to the edge of the door for your backset and clamp it. I have them with a spreader to separate two pcs for the proper door thickness. .....that way, no blowout on the other side-drill part way through from one side-finish up from the other side.
Not real necessary for a two sided one-just use the centering bit on the hole saw and switch to the other side of the door.
edge bore might be a bit tight as well-the two sided with the proper edge bore in the spreader will help you drill out that hole. Or, hang on tight and free hand drill it - or chisel out the opening necessary-carefully.
Rent (or buy if you're doing a lot) a lock boring jig
I've had to do the same thing with doors that have older locks, but a lock boring jig assembly easily solves the problem of enlarging holes to the standard 2 1/8 bore, as well as correctly placing the hole in the edge for the latch.
lock jig
Bought the jig. Worked great. Thanks for all the suggestions.
