In a nearby stripmall this place opened up back in the spring–haven’t had the guts to go check it out yet–afraid of what I might find–
Wonder if they are in the market for a local pine box supplier?
Right next door is the H&H Cafe (Health and Happiness) I think—Haven’t gone in there either….

Hey, I assume the strip mall isn't the big one with a few levels? Maybe it won't be long before a store comes there, too!
I have been thinking about looking into "preparing for the inevitable", but I haven't mustered the guts. They say it's a guy thing!I get paid to do carpentry. That makes me a professional.
If I work on my own house does that make me a DIY?
isn't the big one with a few levels? If your thinking the MOA then no---local 12 store strip mall in Blmtn. But I heard franchise rights are for sale if you are thinking of changing professions....Ya thinking of coming up to the cities at all? Since your gonna go in with a level head (not grieving because you just lost a loved one.) Ask all the tough questions about quality. Pocket screws? Biscuits? waterproof glue? And don't forget to test fit one.

Test fit one?Does that mean I have to stay the same size till I pass on?Are these returnable if they don't fit upon the time of death?
Pocket screws? Excellent--are they stainless or just zinc?Oh I see if I want SS then it is an upgrade---Can I have my chose of species of woods? How about inlays? Is that plywood furniture grade? In Greenville, SC at the corner of Pleasantburg and Wade Hampton there was a store called "Casket Sales & Garments"I guess it would not be fitting to have a nude corpse?

Actually, the "And More" part refers to their storm door business!
One other thought. You can go online to Costco and buy a casket at discount house prices. Pictures too! http://www.costco.com/Common/CategoryMain.aspx?cat=20595
One important note: They're sold out till 9/6!
I guess we can all be glad they didn't call it "Caskets 'R US"

I see there may be a Chinese restaurant next door...Hmmmm.
If you haven't drawn blood today, you haven't done anything.
I haven't been in there either, but, there has been a casket store near here for I think 5-7 years. It's on a fairly major road, 6 lane highway, in an upscale area. They are paying real rent, that is for sure.
I believe the concept is that you can purchase a casket for a bunch less than the funeral homes charge - maybe 25% less. On a $3,000 or $4,000 box, that's some change. Maybe a big box store has a new subsidiary, and a place to get rid of some of the lumber that they don't use.

If the funeral homes are like the car dealerships around here if they don't sell you the parts they won't install them.
where do you live in Bloomington,MN, I live there too! Never have gone in there myself....

Small world, We live over by Dwan Golf course. I know of the casket store as my dentist is across the street.
Like your motto! Thank you for the perspective!
I got both a chuckle and shivers out of the photo. Just for nostalgia, I learned that in the olden days, the furniture maker was also the casket maker. In my former job, there was a customer with a name something like "So & So, furniture and funeral home". I thought that was strange indeed, until someone explained it to me.
Also, recently in a genealogy discussion, it did come up that caskets are less expensive in certain counties, etc., than at the local funeral home. But, a strip mall! Wonder if they will make it seeing as most folks don't like to go out shopping and have death staring them in the face. (Not that pre-planning is a bad thing.)
Oh, back to the motto, which I embrace!, someone asked a young high school lady what her passion was in the field she's chosen to study in college. Someone replied "My passion is ambivalence." I'd say mine is the pursuit of more time for loafing. Too little time for good loafing these days I say.
Like toilet paper. Everyone is going to need one eventually.
I have climbed into an attic where the HO had a pair of caskets stored. She warned me about them. Said they were empty. I didn't check.
She also said she had a spot selected in the family plot, about 100' away. Be prepared I guess.
I noticed more than a few of the emergency preparedness supply web stores sell body bags. From that I saw on TV there were a couple of cases in NOLA where they would have been helpful. Better than leaving the bodies on the bodies unceremoniously at the side of the road.
Everyone dies. It is part of life. Planning ahead and making provision for this eventuality seems, IMHO, quite healthy. IMO the funeral business, while mostly well meaning, has alienated death from our consciousness which makes it more traumatic when it does happen.
The disruption of a death in the family often eliminates a chance of a reasoned approach to the necessities that follow. So coffins, burial plots and 'perpetual care agreements' become status symbols and 'proof of love'. Likely grandmother would have rather the $6000 casket, $2500 plot and $5000 perpetual care agreement, the numbers are just an illustration but I don't think unrealistic, go toward their grandchild's education than go into the ground with her.
Buying the caskets early and having the spot marked just makes it two things the family need not worry about when the day comes. That the grandkids can 'visit grandma' by walking out the back door can be comforting if seen in the right light.
From what I read almost all states allow on site preparation of the body, actual embalming is not needed, and burial by the family without benefit of professional undertakers. Something not widely advertised. There are some rules and the death has to be officially recorded but the procedures are not complicated from what I read. There are substantial savings to be had and I have talked to a couple of people who have gone this route and they found it comforting and much better than the commercial methods.
There are quite a few online resources if the subject interests you.
Hey Mike is that the same thing as what people call a "big box store"? lol

Actually I get the catalogue and shop online. It would appear that there is some demand for DIY caskets.
