Greetings,
I’ve been digging through the forums here for advice on refacing the kitchen cabinets in my old house, and haven’t seen my exact question. The cabinets are rock solid, so I’d really like to do a reface. The kitchen isn’t large, about 12 x 12 feet. Now, I’ve read Kimball Hendrick’s book, which is a great help but he talks about using pressure-sensitive veneer. I’d like to use veneer that I’ve sawn myself from trees that had to come down on our lot. I’ve used veneer on woodworking projects (panels in doors) but not on anything substantial like cabinets. The lumber is a gorgeous silver maple with some great spalting, and I’ll do the doors to match.
So, is this nuts? I sort of think it is, but can’t let go of the idea. If not, what is the best adhesive to use? The cabinets have layers of oil-based paint on them, so how should I prep the surface?
Thanks for any advice.
Carol

not nuts at all...
If you are talking about refacing the face frame and bulding new doors with your wood it's not very risky.
If you hope to reface large areas like doors and end panels that's a whole 'nother issue.
