As you can see in the photo, the pitch of the overhang isn’t very much. A couple of years ago, my grandfather put up vinyl siding on both gable ends. Problem now is that after 50 years, its finally starting to leak. My problem is that with the vinyl siding newly installed, I am not sure how to install new roofing and flashing underneath the J channel strip along the bottom. Is there any way to somehow temporarily remove the bottom piece of vinyl sidding or get the bottom edge detached?

It looks like the vinyl above the o/h should start with a metal starter strip. You should be able to start at one end and unsnap the bottom edge of the vinyl from the starter.
You have any pictures that are closer up of the area(s) in question?
This is same question you askin the roofing under J-channel thread.
You are most likely going to get the same advice.
AB, remove at least one course of vinyl and starter strip. Then find the ORIGINAL counterflashing for the roof, if you left the old siding on. Now, remove the old siding at the bottom, and install your new roof material up the wall and behind the rake boards at least 6 inches. Do not expect the vinyl siding to prevent leaks at all. It is a decorative siding only! Apply counterflashing material down over the roof material if your are using shingles(lead, copper). The counterflash must be behind EVERTHING!
Grace Co. makes a great peel and stick flashing. Good luck!
One more thing, there should not be "j" channel at the bottom of the wall, there should "starter strip" and it should be not be nailed low to the roof as the nails will leak.
Sam, I agree that there should be a starter strip there if the courses line up. However, if the siding on the front needs to match the courses on the side, it may not permit a starter. What I wnormally do in that case is run flasing up the wall like normal, but I don't nail the j channel through the flashing. My supplier has a 5" tall starter available. I'll install that and use tek screws or zip screws to anchor the jchannel to the taller starter. This way, I don't run the risk of possible leaks in through the fastner locations. I also will use a permatab to secure the siding into the J channel so it doesn't come loose. Last year, we resided over 400 homes and have not had a single leak or "blow offs" from any of our jobs that we anchored the siding this way.
