Taunton Press should have books that will answer all of your questions.
And the following site should be able to help get you started.

Does your roof have solid plywood decking, or skip sheathing (boards)? What type of new roofing are you using?
Sounds like you plan to do this yourself. I did the same to a house I owned awhile back.... new soffit, fascia, rakes, and then re-roof.
What I did was start by just stripping the shingles at the overhang so that I could get at and remove the drip edge. This gives you good access to the fascia without worrying about roof leaks while you work on the trim. I also scabbed on longer rafter tails while I was up there so that I could have a larger overhang (soffit).
For the rakes I had to work a little differently, since this house had flat rakes (no over hang). Here I just stripped about an inch or so of shingles down the length so that I could cut the drip edge out of the way to replace the rake boards and also add a 1x3 shadow.
Once your trim work is buttoned up you can have at the roof. I also did this by myself. I stripped one side in a day, papered it and went to bed with my azz whooped. Got up the next day and shingled it. The third day I cleaned up the mess and a rested a bit. On the fourth day I stripped and papered the other side. Shingled it on the fifth. Then had the weekend to lick my wounds and clean up again.
The following weekend I started stripping the siding....
What do you mean by sheething at the chimney and skylight? Do you mean sheathing or do you mean flashing or something? I wouldn't mess with the sheathing unless it needs replacing. I always replace flashings while replacing a roof. No sense putting on a 30 year roof if you've got 6 months of life left in the flashings.
Try the Taunton or JLC bookstores online for more good help.
Good luck.
Hey Dieselpig:
I've done a few roofs before but not a 12/12, which is on my current home. If you were to do strip and reroof this how would you approach it. I was thinking of renting staging. I was even thinking of contracting it out and looking up at and being glad it's not me up there.
Just my .02, but I've been building an 8:12 roof on one project while roofers redo my 7:12 house. What we've been doing has felt like incredibly hard work--getting lumber and plywood up there, finding ways to work safely--whereas the roofers make it look easy. If there's ANY way you can make some decent money while pros do your roof, go for it. Plus, they know lots of tricks that speed things up and make for a better job.
Yeah, my instincts tell me that you are right. I just walk around the house sometimes and say "that's not such a big job". A coworker of mine (engineer, desk jockey) fell off his roof last year and messed himself up pretty badly. Thanks for the .02."With every mistake we must surely be learning"
I agree with David. When I did my own roof, I had more time than money and was still feeling romantic about home ownership.
I frame about 15 roofs of varying sizes and shapes a year and sub out the roofing on every single one of them. And I own a forklift!View Image
