Quick question – my mother in law is having new siding put on the house. Now, i am not a contractor/builder, but having helped my dad renovate our houses, I learned that things look a lot better if they are brought down to the base. By that I mean, stripping off old paint/finish before one repaints (or re-finishes). My question then is it ok technique to apply new siding over old or should the old siding be removed first? In this case i think the original siding is clapboard being covered by vinyl.
Seems to me it would be better to remove the old instead of covering it up, particularly if the old siding is warping ins ome areas to the point of pulling out nails.
Is this one of those topics that gets everyone divided into two camps with no clear consensus?

With vinyl siding it seems to be the case they go right over the old with a layer of 1 to 1 1/2" ridged insulation then the siding. I don't know why maybe cost is a factor. Not much help for you sorry. Jeff
because the old claps could be the only thing holding the house together!
Plus...the cost of labor. If you are going with vinyl.....I'd guess a budget is coming in to play here to......so I'd bet the cost of stripping and resheathing would blow the budget.
An overlay with fanfold or dow blueboard to add a little insulation value..and more importantly give a flat(er) surface is standard building practice. If U wanna add any real insulating value blow it in from the outside before the vinyl goes up...that way the interior is untouched and the plugs are cover by the new siding. Jeff.......Sometimes on the toll road of life.....a handful of change is good.......
What about seemless steel siding? is it much better for weather tightness? Looks? Is it Fine?
We ripped off all the old clapboards on my parents house. To get to a level surface. No opinion just the way we did it.
It can be done either way. If you wish to tear it off then you may be exposing other problems and they will need to be addressed. If you wish to leave the old siding on then I would re-nail or screw on the loose sections. Or replace any damaged pieces. The main purpose of foam is leveling. Especially with clapboard style homes. The R value gained is so minimal that it is not a factor. Some people swear it is but it really is not. There is no true correct answer to the question you ask. Only what you (the homeowner) are comfortable with. After all thats who has to be satisfied with the job. Isnt it?
Thanks all.
The guys doing the work are putting an insualtion board on. so that seems ok.
Will see how they will handle the side that has lots of damage.
Will have to start a thread for my house :). Had to pull off some barnboard siding. Need to replace and have to try to find a source...
