LOTS is contrustion adhesive for a sqeak-free, strong installation
I just put new MDF skirts ABOVE existing treads with lots of Liquid Nails; really helped the squeaks, even tho' I had screwed the crappy old treads prior to carpet.
Good luck!

Depends on how you are going to finish the new work.
If the work will be bright finished I use PL where it won't show when it squeezes out and yellow wood glue where it will sjow when it squeezes out. The yellow glue can be craped off aftr it cures easier than the PL.
If it will be painted, PL everything to everything.
