I have a 3 season porch that does not support anything on top of it, only it’s roof. Underneath the porch is a 3.5 foot crawl space. I need to redo the supports of the porch and was planning to dig down 4 feet and have supports every 5 feet, using lally columns. I got to thinking about it and was wondering: instead of 1 lally column every 5 feet, is there any added support or benefit by putting 2 lally columns every 5 feet, esentially doubling up? If I did that I assume I would need to double the width of the cement/concrete footings the columns would rest on.
It is a messy and dirty project, but am kinda looking forward to it! I live in Eastern MA, near Boston.
Any thoughts?
Joe

Why do you think you should double up the columns?
