I will be installing new Andersons in a late 1800’s home with no sheathing, cedar claps, asbestos shingles over the claps, a layer of 1/2″ Extruded Polystyrene, and vinyl siding. I have room to install ~4″ trim around the windows, but I am curious how to seal the windows in and to what? I’ll be lining the R.O. with 2x material, and I am assuming I should seal to the original claps and asbestos shingles, then put J-channel around the trim to accept the vinyl. Perhaps a combo or Vycor, expanding foam sealant, caulks, etc… Any ideas?

From the inside use a low expansion foam product designed for windows and doors to seal the windows to the rough opening. Vycor around the outside to seal and provide a drainage plain.
The problem is, since there is no sheathing or housewrap, should I try to vycor from the window flange to the clapboards and if so, will the Vycor be flexible enough to follow over all the high and low spots??? I will also make a proper pan flashing and install a drip cap. Yes, the solution I'm looking for really entails being able to seal the window to make it part of the drainage plane - I am assuming to the claps. In this case, the flange will have to sit on a small strip of plywood sheathing, next to the claps, then will have trim over it which meets with the asbestos shingles, and finally, it will have an additional "backband" to make up the thickness of the vinyl. I just can't think of how to properly seal the window to the clapboards though.
