I’m a contractor in Minnesota (land of 10,000 humidity fluctuations) who’s finally getting around to building his own house. I plan on installing solid hardwood flooring (something other than oak) throughout the main level, but don’t know if there are certain species to absolutely avoid because they are hypersensitive to humidity changes. To throw another complicating factor into the hotdish, we also plan on using wood heat, at least on a supplemental basis. The wood stove would likely go in the basement (below the wood floored main level) on a freshly poured concrete slab. I’m not sure if we would install central AC right away or not.
I’m quite partial to CVG Fir or hickory. I would like to use something that adds quite a bit of character, without looking too rustic (like knotty pine – or spruce). My main concern is that with a summertime relative humidity of up to 95% and wintertime RH of 10%, the flooring doesn’t develop massive gaps between boards, that open up and swallow everything in sight.
Any suggestions?
