While I’m hanging out at this forum tonight I thought I might post a few pics of the latest embellishment of my house. I just installed new crown and valence for my kitchen cabinets. I didn’t realize how unfinished the cabinets were until I finally finished them. I milled all the pieces and glued them together before I installed them. The crown consists of 4 pieces built up. What I call the bead, pediment, crown and cornice(bead). The valence is 2 pieces. Here are the results. The cabinets are solid cherry with a natural finish and the accents are black walnut. The dishwasher panel is cherry ply.
The other photos show how I used the kneewall space for a dresser in the upper floor. The last photo shows the drawer fronts for the full extension drawers that I use the under stair space for. I have since filled in the gaps in the floor tile and grout. My house is small so I need all the storage space I can get. The rest of the house is a lot more of the same.

Nice work Mike, I like the style and colors including the rugs and tile at the entry.
Nice work - I love built-ins. Makes it feel like a wooden boat.

Beautiful work Mike, love the cabinet work. What type of cabinets, (custom or ordered OTC)? Great style and color, we have been looking for something along that line.

At the time I didn't have the time to make the kitchen cabinets so we ordered them semi custom. Now I wish I could have made the time because we could have saved a lot of money. They are made by Crystal. The style is "Shaker". I did make the matching panel for the dishwasher and the range hood. I also made the nosing for the counter. It is finished natural so It was easy to match the color. I had to leave the crown in the sun for a day to darken the cherry a little.Mike Callahan, Lake Tahoe, Ca.
The end result was great, regardless. I am in the same boat, I would love to build them but other projects are calling. Good job!
Mike,
Nice stuff! The crown looks great, especially with the staggered heights of the wall cabinets. On that drawer base, how come there are different handle types. I'm a stickler for matching hardware and finishes.
The builtin's are nice too.

We like the shell pulls for the larger drawers. My wife is as big a stickler as anyone. If it didn't bother her then it passed the test. The shell pulls would not work on the cabinet doors. The knobs on the drawers were used because the shell wouldn't fit in the space between the stiles and rails. The hardware came from Lee Valley from the same series.Mike Callahan, Lake Tahoe, Ca.
Nice work Mike, I particularly like the built ins, great way to utilize what otherwise is wasted space.

I like it. Crisp clean lines of simple proportions.
A bit off the end of Shaker, but the theme is there.
I can only wait till my casa reaches the same milepost.

Thanks Sphere.
Actually the style...if you can call it that is kind of a bungaloid/ carpenter gothic..... I give up It's Callahan Style. You might remember the outside. Here is a photo to remind you. The other elevations are more of the same. The whole exterior is salvaged redwood including the trim.
Since this photo I have added skirting to the front deck and stairs.
I understand what you are saying.... Mi casa will never be done. If I get divorced maybe... but I love my wife so the honeydoos go on and on.Mike Callahan, Lake Tahoe, Ca.
I think last outside pic I saw it was snowcovered.

Mike, in the first pic, the lower section of the back splash, is that a solid piece? It looks like there may be a joint but if it is tiled the grout is dark and matches the background. If solid what did you use?
Those are rips of the same material that I used for the counter top. The counter top is polished Brazilian Slate. The tiles were 2' x 2' x 9/16th". I built out the back a little to hide a few chips and make the 24" width work. The grout we used was onyx green. It matched good enough. I tried to install the tile tight. The thickness varied a little so I did a little polishing after it was installed. The slate is nice stuff. It is very heavy and dense. It doesn't stain like granite.Mike Callahan, Lake Tahoe, Ca.
