Stan,
I’m picking on you because I would consider you the resident stair expert, but this question is open to anyone (like I needed to give permission for others to respond)
A customer has an old newel post from his Mom. She was saving it to put in her mansion some day. All I have is the post, about 32″ tall and 4.5″ square at the base. He would like to display it with some kind of base. I was thinking about recreating a bottom tread to a set of stairs, just enough to hold up the post. He made reference to a base to make it look like a trophy. I would love ideas (and photos if possible) from anyone.
Thanks,
Joe

Is it still a newel post if it's old?
You must be BADABing.

A photo from you would help. I would be inclined to do a simple base, like a column in architecture might have--something that will not draw attention away from the post itself. It would be nice if you could incorporate it into the structure of his house--to re-use it in the manner for which it was intended. Or, you could always wire it and make a lamp out of it!
Was the newel originally on the first tread or the floor?

I'm just sayin'
Okay - lets explore an avant garde approach. How about a hollow square glass (structural) newel of 1/2" thick tempered glass, with the antique "floating" inside?
Sort of like a reliquary and the finger bones of St. Stephen.

Completed.
This is definitely in the category of "what the customer wants, the customer gets".
Yes it looks a little crooked, the base of the post isn't square or plumb in any way, shape or form. But when you step back, the post as a whole looks straight in real life.
(it also needs a final dusting)
wow! I hope nothing is ever that sentimental to me to cause me to go through all that trouble for that
yep, that'll work.
Pretty nice.
