At the top of stairs to a second floor, there is a landing with a newell post, with a hall way on the right. In relation to the landing, where should the newell post be? Or in relation to the top riser, past it, even?
Currently the newell post is set back (towards the bottom of stairs) about half way in the middle of the final tread.

The way code is written you need fall protection from tip of nosing, so it should be in line with the nosing of top floor. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to have the newel there if you can install a baluster(s) in that area, but might look odd. The baluster and top rail there would need to meet force requirements of code. Your inspector may be fine w/ it as drawn (it’s close), but should confirm with them.
