newly dug footing hole is “wet” in basement slab
Hi,
Had to dig a 32″ x 32″ x 8″ deep footing in an existing basement floor. It’s for a column in the first floor to hold up the roof. Architect drew the plans and it’s approved.
Broke through the concrete slab with a saw and now excavated out the 4 to 6″ of dirt from the bottom.. Question, dirt’s wet. As in very wet but not puddling. I know concrete can set in water but now I have a broken seal under the concrete floor – now I’ll have a space if you will of weakness.
I know to dig under the existing slab a bit so that the new footing goes a little bit under the existing slab to grip but do I now have a new problem? This should waterproof yes? I don’t anticipate the new load on the new footing to be that heavy. That being said, the idea that I’m now experiencing some wet dirt has me worried. Half of the basement is walkout to the ground meaning I’m on a slope so this is definitely run off water. And I’m not anywhere near a flood zone.
Any prep ahead of time? Fortunately the water doesn’t smell like septic 😉

I don't know where you are located but you need your footing to go as deep as the foundation's footings are into the ground, and you need to get down to solid dry earth to get the proper support for whatever you are installing?supporting.
