Nominal + Dimensional Joist Hanger Help!
Hello there! I’ve searched the forums but can’t seem to find an answer here… (and searching Simpson’s website is a bit intimidating; figured some of you ol’ pros would have quick recommendations!).
Here’s the question: does Simpson make any double joist hangers that accommodate a dimensional piece of lumber beside a nominal piece of lumber?
What I’m trying to do:
I have a 2×8 header between floor joists that is original to a historic home (dimensional size: true 2″ x 8″). See pic 1 for a portion of the header highlighted in yellow; too hard to capture the entire 6′ header with a good photo.
I would like to double it up for reinforcement with an additional header right beside it, using a new 2×8 (1.5″ x 7.25″).
Trying to consider the best way to attach the new 2×8; my thought was to wrap them both in a joist hanger…but not sure how that works when they’re different sizes, both depth and width.
Bonus question: I’m also trying to run a new 2×4 alongside the bottom edge of this original 2×8 joist (see pic 2). Any recommendation on how to best hang it off the header, along the joist? (is there some type of “corner” hanger?)
Thanks all!

I think I might go another route and just take out the original (dimensional) 2x8 and add in 2 new ones. Might make things easier.
I assume you looked at Simpson's catalog? They will make custom hangers. Talk to a good lumberyard.
I think that if you would take out the original 2x8 and add two other ones, it would surely make it easier. However, I have to admit that you can also find some pretty damn great hangers from Simpson's catalog, as their custom hangers are a true work of art. But, since you are not a specialist in this domain, I would recommend you to make it the easier way and maybe even get some simple hangers from https://www.scrooz.com.au/hardware/joist-hangers/ and see how they would work, as it will be much easier for you to work with a simple hanger.
Look under engineered lumber and TJI hangers in the catalog. You will find what you need.
This will give you the Simpson item numbers for rough cut 2” and 4” joist hangers. You can buy them directly from this site or order them elsewhere. https://www.fastenersplus.com/collections/urlur-rough-cut-hangers?utm_term=&utm_campaign=%23%23Dynamic+Ads+-+Connectors+-+Joist+Hangers&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&hsa_acc=3477180114&hsa_cam=15237743245&hsa_grp=124898344530&hsa_ad=570921792196&hsa_src=g&hsa_tgt=dsa-1463524234718&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIm7Xx9djQ-AIVZfLjBx154QspEAAYASAAEgKLF_D_BwE
With the original 2x8 at 2" plus a new 2x8 at 1.5" that's 3.5 inches. That sure sounds like a 4x hanger to me.
That's right.
I'd leave the original in, use a 2x10 that is ripped to 8", so it's actual is 1.5 x 8. Since your original is 2, then you will have a 3.5 wide beam, which can be supported with a 4x6 or 4x8 hanger.
Bonus question: I'd use a simpson corner bracket to get it in place, and then run 2 engineered ledger screws on a diagonal through the joist back into the beam.
