We’ve used Waterlox on our first & second (beech & birch) floors with pretty good results. But when walking in socks, they’re a bit slippery. So when contemplating stair finishes, I’m wondering what other use to increase friction? (I’ve walked on some pool deck painted finished that added sand, has anyone tried?)

I've mixed silica (came in a little plastic tub, like a yogurt container) in paint to paint steps; I think it would work in a clear finish too.
Hi, you better wear shoes or put a partial floor cover down, the sand will not help with clear finish (and socks) and it looks like there is sand in the finish too. I'd rather fall on smooth stairs versus sandy stairs!
There are some products that are used in Malls and Hospitals, etc. I've never used them and don't know how they would work on wood. The sand additives act like sandpaper and wear themselves out fairly fast. I think there are some boat varnishes that have anti-slip properties. Carpets, runners or full width, help quiet stairs and prevent the inevitable riser marks and tread wear.
