We’re about to buy a Noritz tankless water heater and was wondering if anyone that has installed one could let me know if you use the remote controller and what you use it for. I’m just trying to decide on whether it’s worth buying. Thanks.

I have yet to install the remote for my Takagi, but it displays diagnostic codes when needed, and there's bound to be a day when that's needed. I would talk to the Noritz techs and see what they say about the unit. It should be relatively affordable, probably $100-200 plus a piece of thermostat wire to connect it.
David, thanks for the input. Nothing I've read mentioned the availability of diagnostics. I'll be calling them today and will be asking about their take on the remote. Richard
We have one and use it. But (if you're talking about the wall-mount, wired one) I thought it came with the heater. I think maybe Takagi is more piecemeal about what you get as standard, but IIRC our Noritz had it in the box.
You need it if you want to turn the heater on/off besides cutting power. We haven't really done that, but I could see doing it for a vacation. You also control the output temp set point with it, and it has an LED that shows when the burner is lit.
I pretty much think you'd be flying blind without one. I use it to tell whether the burner's lit when I'm running a relatively low flow at the sink. And we had some troubleshooting early on that it was invaluable for. Temp was originally set at maybe 120F. Last summer (warm incoming water), combined action between our shower's thermostatic valve and the heater would drop flow low enough to cut out the burner. Then you got a shot of cold water and the thermostatic valve would want more hot, and the cycle would start again. Turning the output temp down to 105F seems to have corrected this and is fine comfort wise.
The Noritz should come with the remote as part of the package. Get a battery/surge protector while your at it. The isolater water connectors that they offer would be a good thing.
