normal labor price

bstcrpntr | Posted in General Discussion on March 22, 2005 03:57am

Had a guy call me today wanting a “normal” price on finishing drywall.  I am in southern illinois, hour east  of st. louis mo.   I know I can hang for about 12 to 16 cents per foot, but i don’t know for finishing, and we are thinking of tackling a good size job together.  Anybody know what number I am looking for here?  Also, I am wondering how to bid to do insulation, we might tackle that aspect too.   All help appreciated, as I am on my own for the first time.

An inch to short.  That’s the story of my life !

$40 A board in Denver area is an ave. price. Including delivery, 4 x 12 .5 inch material, finished thru texture. Your hanging price is what I've paid and is consistent in that $40 figure. Subtract your material costs and your hanging price and there's your ballpark.

Is that primed or painted, or just textured?  An inch to short.  That's the story of my life !

Only to texture, prime and paint is for the painter.

Prices range here in OKC 45-50 cents/sq.ft for hanging, tape and bed and finish (textured type, not smoothwall) Thats residential, commercial is about the same from my experience////

Hit 'em hard, hit 'em fast, SHOW NO MERCY!!!

I should also add that there's a lot of labor here from the "south" that are charging in the mid 30 cent bracket, doing a lousy job and builders are using them every day, then complaining about the quality of the work they get....better bid it on the high end of my previous post and be ready to do a reputable job......if you can't make 50 cents a sq ft then you'll probably lose your shirt anyway.....unless you're paying your help 3-4 bucks an hour like the crews I mentioned are getting paid here....

i was considering bidding at .60 to hang and finish the rock.  Talked to my local taper, who i have used much, and he wants .40 to finish.  That leaves me .20 per foot for hanging labor.  Are we on the same page or should I charge .50 just to hang?  I am getting more confused as I type so i will stop now.

      thanks

rates here are around 50 cents per square foot to hang, tape and bed and texture finish....the cheap labor rate for "south of the border" crews are mid 30's, but thats another story all together.....bidding somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-55 should get you there as long as you've got a couple guys who aren't slackers....(we called 'em "donkeys" in upstate NY)...lol!!! How good are you at drywall?? and, are they after smoothwall finish or textured?? Smoothwall is going to be more labor intensive for sure....Hit 'em hard, hit 'em fast, SHOW NO MERCY!!!

Around here, it is a min. $1.25 supplied, hung, finished.

I don't know what textured is.

Your client want the lowest price he can get, why do you feel so compelled to give it to him?

You are not using numbers to develop your price.

        I see you getting hurt.

          for me .. it's around $.80

better said ... for my area .... I try to pay .. not hang/finish the stuff!

i will not be finishing the drywall myself.  I have already had a pro bid that sidw for me.  I am just suppling and hanging, but I am adding in the finish price with a bit for me.  Owner has not said a word about lowest price, though I do want to give the best price I can.  thanks to all for your help
