There’s a problem with wasps in my neighbourhood, as far as I know it’s been there forever.
Thousands of them come out in july and fly around until september-october.
I’m not afraid of them but when you’re trying to eat on the deck and there are several wasps flying around your food – it’s really annoying. And other people don’t have my thick skin so it’s even worse for guests.
My deck’s horisontal boards are a composite, but the posts and rails are either cedar or PT. I can’t tell, it’s old and grey. The wasps love to chew on it. To the point that after a season you can see streaks of clear wood in the middle of the old grey everywhere.
I just about gave up on finding ways to get rid of the wasps altogether, but I had an idea recently: could I cover the wood with something that doesn’t alter the look and doesn’t smell but makes it not tasty for the wasps? They can find some bark to chew instead, there are plenty of trees around.
Wasp traps and bug zappers won’t get enough of them to make any difference.
I appreciate any ideas, thanks in advance.

I would try borate wood treatment. I have never used it for wasps, but it keeps termites and carpenter ants from chewing on wood. It doesn't discolor the wood much when I've sprayed it inside stud bays.
