I’m currently installing ceiling speakers in an unfinished basement ceiling. Where the speaker needs to go (to be even with the other in the other side), we’re about 3 inches of the speaker cone short (and the speaker is not very tall).
My thought is to notch the joist to 2 or so inches accommodate the rim of the speaker, and it could be cut at an angle (same as the cone angle). Is it okay to notch or cut into a joist? If so, what do I need to do after notching to ensure integrity. If not at all, what are some possible solutions. My hope is that the notch doesn’t even go all the way through the board if cut at an angle. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Here’s the general rule of thumb for code.
The diagram Jlyda posted is correct but only applies to solid lumber not trusses or engineered lumber.
This is perfect. Thank you for the help.
Unfinished ceiling, right? Notch the joist, install the speaker, sister another joist.
could also add some blocking between the joists to "tie" them together and distribute to load better
another thought is to add 2x stock to the joist you're notching above the notch to make it "stronger" at that point
good luck
