I am making a stair kit for a client. He basically wants his help to put it together. It is a straight freestanding stairway…with the treads mortised into 2.5 inch thick stringers. I am mortising 1.25 inch oak stringers…then sandwiching another 1.25 inch stringer to hide the bolts lagging the treads to the inside stringer.
Anyway..here are some shots of the process.

You have to borrow someone else's tools! Your's has never made any strait cut's have they?
As always nice work.

Doug: Thats why I build curved stairways...I gave up a long time ago trying to build anything straight. :)
Glad to see you're back up and running.
Cag: Thanks....I cant wait till the construction on my shop starts. The wall where the air conditioner is will be opened up and that will be the new setup room....I still am working under a blue tarp in my main room.
Stan, on a fully housed tread joint like those shown, how does the design allow for wood movement? Or do we presume the stringers grow in width enough to move along with the treads?
For long heavy stringers like these, you must have a nice planer setup, with good infeed and outfeed support.
Bob: I believe the wood movement is negligible as I have never had any problems with splitting etc.
You would laugh at my planing setup..but it works. I have a Grizzly 8 inch jointer.....with those adjustable rollers that I place 6-8 feet from the infeed and outfeed side. I run them through by myself.
