Just some pictures of a stairway I just set in place. It is mainly a straight stairway with the bottom five treads turning 45 degrees. The inside stringer is completely self supporting as it will have plaster clear down to the floor on the belly of the stairway.
The upper railing will follow the octagonal balcony.

You do great work Stan. I just looked at a job today for a customer that wants his half walls taken out and handrails put in. I'm looking forward to doing the job, but i'm a little tenative. I've done some finish work before, but really havent played on the stairs yet.
Anything special I need to watch out for?

Andy: The face stringer is 5/4. The inside of this stringer has a laminated beam made up og 1/4 inch plywood.....ripped to 8 inches wide....and glued up to 3 inches thick. It feels very stout. Of course all the joints were staggered. What complicated this was the top ten treads are straight...then they do a several degree pitch change at the turn. I had to make a pattern and cut these out of larger rips so that the joints could be staggered a foot apart between laminates.

Yeah, I'd guess that would be stout! Are you using any special glue? I'd think that something like urea formaldehyde would give you some useful open time. Or it could be that you move faster than me <G>.Andy
