Octagon Barrel Vault

Framer | Posted in Construction Techniques on February 10, 2003 06:55am

There’s been alot of discussion lately about Groin Vaults and I’ve never framed one befor but I would love to.

Now I thought of an Octagon Barrel Vault.

Has anyone ever seen/built/ or have any pictures of one, Octagon or any Polygon?

I just drew this real quick.

This might be a little closer to what the Octagon Barrel Vault Roof would look like with plywood on with all 8 Elliptical Valleys.

      Joe,

I don't know for sure, but that looks awfully like a parachute to me ;-)

In his previous life, Joe worked in an umbrella factory in North Sicily.

          It's carry-over. He really can't help himself.

          Try to be understanding.

    Test pictures again.

These pictures are from a little cardboard model I made the other day of the Octagon Barrel Vault.

I glued the Elliptical valleys first. The black lines represent the bottom of the valley/barrel to be sheetrocked and then I put the 8 barreled roofs on top.

I'd still like to build one in full scale and see it sheetrocked. Also curious to see what kind of roof to put on.

          Joe,

I'm not sure how practical it would be to frame a roof like that, but the octagon groin vault might look nice in an octagon room, as a ceiling detail, below a typical roof plan, independent of the roof.

Maybe it would work in a gazebo.

Didn't Momma Carola want one in her back yard?

            Ken,

Momma Carola runs and lives in a Senior Citizens Building and they actually do have a Gazebo in their front yard but no Octagon Barrel Roof.

My wife always wanted a Gazebo in the backyard. Maybe I'll build her one with this roof.

On the last two pictures I posted with the walls I was going to draw in a Gazebo but maybe you can fill it the walls first. ;-)

I told the homeowner about this roof the other day and she said that she just bought a building and she wanted me to build two Turret Roofs on this building like I did on her house. But she wants to see this model and if she likes it she said maybe will build this instead.

If she does it, how about after I help you with those 4 groin vaults in Texas you come to New Jersey and help me with this Octagon Vault. Come on I know YOU would love the challenge just like I would.

No problem Joe. Just let me know in advance. I'll be there baby!

If she doesn't like it as a roof, maybe you could frame it as a ceiling inside one of the turrets instead. Putting a copper roof on that thing that wouldn't leak would be a bitch anyway.

Besides, the ceilings are what are interesting, more than the roofs with these groin vaults. You can always look up and see the ceiling. It's difficult to see the roof.

I'm interested to see structurally if this were to be used as the roof and ceiling what size the Elliptical Valleys would be because they are running almost flat on top.

The difference in wall thickness means alot as far as how thick the Valleys would be.

Someone named John emailed this picture to me yesterday of a partial framed Octagon Barrel Vault  that he saw somewhere.

Whoever did it, did a very nice job of framing it.

            Thanks again John.
