Oh, so that’s why – Panasonic was right

Do you guys remember me bragging about how well the three jaw chuck attachment was holding up in impact mode on my new Panasonic Multi-driver, even though Panasonic specifically states in their literature not to use it that way?
Well… Uh… never mind.

I was trying to think of something clever to say. At first I thought I should bring up the old saying: "Real men dont NEED instructions".
Then I thought maybe I should edit it to say "Real men dont HEED instructions".
No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public [Henry Louis Mencken]
I could argue that the instructions weren't all that clear but there is a picture of the attachment with a red "X" through it, and an arrow pointing to the impact setting, printed right on top of the tool.
The Panasonic, in impact mode, is the only drill I own that will push a 1 1/2" Fostner bit through two layers of 2x4 without bogging down. I mean, it was like slicing butter with a hot knife kind of easy.
The problem is, the fostner didn't fit in the hex attachment approved for impact mode so what the heck, let's just chuck it up and see how it goes. I've since purchased a 1 1/2" spade bit with a hex end that fits nicely into the correct impact attachment.
Now I'm just trying to find out how to order a new 3 jaw chuck that I can treat a little nicer.
Cha-Ching!! "Thank you Mr. Halliburton - pleasure doing business with you... again. Would you like to order a new manual with that attachment?"Kevin Halliburton

I don't see anything wrong that a little ducktape would not fix.
What is not readily apparent in the photo is the pocket full of snap rings and such I picked up around the area of catastrophic failure. I'm still pretty proud of that little Japanese plastic wrapped gizmo though. The innerds are pretty solid stuff.
It's still got it's teeth locked firmly on that Fostner bit and it won't let go. I've used it in impact mode several times since it came apart because I eventually want to disintigrate it enough to retrieve my bit. It comes apart a little more each time but it looks like it may still take a while.
If it doesn't give up soon I may have to give it to my 2 year old for a few minutes. Kevin Halliburton

ROFLOL........looks like something my crew would do! Check the materials site on Panasonics website!
Hey, what duct tape won't fix I use some aircraft safety wire on.
That is mil spec, stainless steel "bailing wire".
Thanks for the tip but sorry - I can't go there.
I'd have to upgrade my entire, half used roll of duct tape collection to "name brand" if I started doing fancy stuff like that.Kevin Halliburton

Also consider hose clamps as a kind of extra high strength duct tape. In this case, install them symmetrically for balance, and keep your hands clear during operation.

That'd be a common misconception....
duct tape isn't high impact sturctural....
he'll need to wrap it with an old soup can first!
Then...of course ...the duct tape.

Well... yea... that did occur to me... but it wasn't in the manual. I've sworn off doing anything with this tool that is not expressly outlined in the manual.
I've really been working with the pipe wrenches, just like they say to in the manual, to get the bit worked loose, but for some reason the wrenches just keep slipping off.
Can one of you guys help me out with this illustration?Kevin Halliburton

I hate to give a serious answer to a non-serious question, thus looking like the fool my wife says I am...
The pipe wrenches are on backwards, turning such that they won't tighten on the collars.
Do it right, or do it twice.
Oh, I thought it might just be that I didn't have any collars any more. From one fool to another - Thanks :-)>Kevin Halliburton

You saw that while I was reading the last two post. Wrench direction is always toward the lower jaw. When using two as shown in the illustration, I would move them closer together and use both hands to squeeze them toward each other.
Dave
Actually I think the open side of the jaws are facing the wrong way. If you turn them around, then they will cinch down on the "pipe" as they are turned. As shown, they will tend to loosen their grip.
Do it right, or do it twice.
Ok, I followed your instructions to the letter.
I reversed the wrenches. Turned the jaws around to face the other way.
I still don't understand how that can work.

Been working. Got a helper who really tries hard, nice enough guy, but precision is not in his vocabulary. Had to remove and reset 4-5 recessed lights because he didn't snap a chalk line or pull a string, and they were 1/4" off. I think he tries too hard...honestly. And gentle is not one of his skills. Taking out cabinets for the remodel, thought we would store them in the barn until needed for something (maybe the barn...what an idea!) and he managed to snag and rip off doors on two units...tilted them the wrong way, doors opened by gravity, caught on a pedestrian door frame...did it twice, same door. I cringe every time he picks up a new cabinet to move it. Still doesn;t realize that the drawers are not latched shut, and they slide open with a bang almost every time he picks them up. But he's installing the ceiling insulation and gooping the old wallpaper backing off the walls, so I try to keep him on certain tasks.
Do it right, or do it twice.
Hey how'd you get my employee!?!Steve

Nothing is impossible...It just hasn't been done yet.
Sorry about hijaking the thread...maybe this should be under "take my helper...please!"
He's gone now, lasted about 2 weeks, then found a new job not in construction. Couple of time I missed him during the day, but no biggie, I don't schedule his every minute. Later he told me he was cleaning the toilet in the master bath, said it was a disgrace. He didn't clean it very well, though.
The phone still works in the house, and occassionally rings. Turns out it's an extension of the phone in the ranch office. I never answer it cuz I know it's not for me. One day he answered it, and it was the ranch foremans wife, nothing urgent, but have him call. Helper says he's out on the tractor cuting the pasture grass (200+ acres). Wife says never mind. Helper mentions it to me, I said don't answer the phone. Next day the foreman tells me the helper went out to the fence and waved until he was seen, foreman drives the tractor over to the fence thinking somethings important, helper relays the phone call.
Everything with him was "good enough". Never showed any real interest in details or going the extra little step.

Seems pretty clear to me.

I hate when I have to concede that my wife might have been right about that turn I missed in Tucson just before I hit the Pacific on the West Coast.
What this World really needs is fast Trans-Pacific and Trans-Atlantic ferries. Then I could be a little more insistent about the fact that I did not miss my turn...
Not to mention that I could stop in Japan and pick up a new attachment for my Multi-driver - Then I would be able to insist that I meant to go that way in the first place.Kevin Halliburton

Wreck,
That drill is toast.
Pack it up and mail it to me.
Maybe I can fix it.
Other wise I will not charge you for disposing of it!
