I’ve been using an oil based primer followed by a waterborne paint. I believe it is important to prime crown moulding on all sides so that it doesn’t expand and shrink with moisture.
The Muralo Ultra waterborne paint is really good stuff that stays looking fresh. It doesn’t yellow like oil base paints (alkyds and the sort). The oil paints do yellow quickly – I have compared one year old trim paint with freshly painted alkyd and the difference is unbelievable.
I often add add some Floetrol to the Muralo paint if painting a wide surface in order to minimize brush marks. Actually, the paint flows better and minimizes brush marks when it is humid. I strongly recommend trying the paint – it makes painting fun. I have not vested interest – except that I learned the hard way.
Make certain to sand and clean the surface between coats.

What should I use on interior wood trim (crown, base, doors)?
Oil based primer with exterior grade latex enamel or oil based primer with oil enamel?
Does one leave more (or "deeper") brush strokes than the other?
Up for grabs,
Dan Morrison
*The softest most beautiful glow on interior trim comes with sanding (all imperfections, mill marks, raised grian, burns etc. gone), oil primer, more sanding to smooth the surface, clean with dust brush, then tack cloth. Finish with 2 top coats of a high quailty alkyd satin or semi-gloss enamel. A little Penetrol in the paint helps eliminate drag, and promotes good leveling charactoristics. If there is a latex that can produce this kind of finish with no brush tracks, I've yet to see it. Never use paint intended for exterior use on interior trim and doors.
*Thanks for your reply kcoyner,Pardon my ignorance, but why should I never use exterior paint on interior trim and doors? Thanks,Dan Morrison
*Exterior paints are formulated to preform outdoors. They have different film forming and build charactoristics. They also flow differently. Many alkyds claim interior and exterior but I would never use anything on the exterior but "exterior paint". To this end, the universal alkyds are suitable for indoors and may be used outdoors as opposed to suitable for out and may be used indoors.

*I have been using Moore-Glo latex trim paint on trim and BOAT HULLs for years with very good luck. I allmost allways use a good latex primer not oil.
