cut the drive down and moved some boulders around to the new walk-out area..
*tore off the deck and started excavation....the water line was laid in an "S"... we found it .. the first time...snagged it the 2d time....quick fix...
*got some help from a passing ozzie in forming the footings.. after the form company started crying about what a tight site and whine , whine , whine...
*dug up our 16' chute and our 8' and some staging..add a super plasticizer for good flow...
*some of us were a bit tuckered...cadioli catchin his wind....
*here's the frost wall at the bottom...
*in for a dime .. in for a dollar...didn't want 'cher stinkin from company anyway...couple boxes of snap-ties... and a little old fashioned form building..
*a pump truck ... cause old guys don't like to shovel...
*tie wall at the upper end.. plus we broke the block web open to get flow and a lock into the old block foundation..also the vertical & horizontal bars , keyway in the footing, asphalt foundation coat for a cappillary break...
*cadioli topping ....
*stripped, snap-ties snapped...west end
*and the north side....
*(bad focus)... hats off to mark & roy...
*ROFLOLThey look like the best of buddies.hahaha
*Good thing you had him there to hold down them boulders.
*Thanks Mike.I hope we're going to see the rest of this job as well.b : )
*notice Roy has his Caperfest shirt on ?...
*No no, Luka - He's australian:
*ROFLMFAO
*this crawl space will have hot air duct in it.. so i wanted an insulated wall.. we used 3" eps treated with borate (Performguard) with a 1/2" drywall bonded to it for firecode...here's a shot showing the board notched to let the joists run thru..
*there is a footing with an interior drain below the top of the footing and 6 mil poly over the drain...then gravel over the poly..the poly is glued to the wall with roof cement... and the eps board sits on the poly on the footing to keep it dry....
*after we knocked off for the day.. the truss company decided to deliver the trusses 3 days early.. with a 40' trailer.. that could not get in the drive....so here's our trusses...lucky it's a small job.. we'll probably move 'em on my truck...
*it was raining ..so we went to Tommy's Diner for breakfast...
*stood the front gable wall up today.....
*here's the framing.....tried to leave out everything we could so there'd be more room for insulation
*Man, what did you do to Mark? He looks rode hard and put away wet.
*That's the first time I've seen him without his arms crossed. That guy must really not like having his picture taken.b : )
*here's my new toy... adjustable braces..man are these slick... course they been around for years in commercial work
*working on the insulated gable end ...wait , i think mark has something in his eye !
*here's the energy heel on the dropped gable end truss
*Mike- Where'd ya get that fancy handle for the Stiletto hammer? Bob
*at Quaker Lane Tool...some kind of polymer... some ole faht named bob told me about stilletto..
*ahha-did you break your original handle and then replace it with polymer or did Stiletto sneek a hammer design past me?Bob
*the 2d... this one had bad mold marks on it.. but a little sanding made it poifect...and today's lesson is cutting off the overhang...
*so we cvould install the let-in hanger base for the half-trusses..
*and hang the half trusses...
*then start the overframe for the rest of the roof...
*Mike,I hope that guy is paying you well for the learning experience.b : )
*oh, yes, he's paying very well indeed.. especially for the remedial lessons...
*Is that Mike's boat in the background?
*here's the box cornice for the gable ends....
*and roy sheathing them...
*for the finished product...
*It's gonna take an awful lot of caulk to close up that gap.b : )
*while barry was stripping the xstg roof...
*roy and i were running trim...
*and then we papered in ... with ice & water starter course...
*errrr...Luka....Mike uses ham sandwiches for gaps like that..
*I knew that ice & water stuff was tough, but do you have to use that circular saw to cut it??
*ROFLMFAOI suppose his customers are always wondering where all the ants come from.
*Gee Ralph...don't you know anything??...guess it comes from living in Florida where they don't have ice and water...that isn't a circular saw...see thats one of those new Ice and Water saws..they make an easy job real difficult.
*today was strip and clean the west roof...
*and we caught a break when they sent the forklift for a rooftop delivery....
*so by 4:30 the roof had ice & water on the low slope and Roofer's Select on the 6/12 pitch...
*Roy only owns one pair of pants, right ?b : )
*naw.... he's got blue cammy cargo shorts and maroon cammy cargo shorts... ...sometimes he just disappears...... roy!... roy!dammn cammy ... guy just seems to disappear...
*Hey Mike!- Quick question?- you pre-assembled the box cornice! why didn't you have them sheath it before they installed it?
*couldn't nail it on with the sheathing in place... well, you could but it would't have stayed....
*OK. If you say so! :)
*this job is "paint by owner... so here's Ed having a ball....
*got the casements installed in the kitchen..
*Great job Mike ! Looks like you'll need a deck. Hey! I thought you were supposed to stand on scaffolding,Someone taking a lunch break or just loungin on the job ? Bob
*that's Roy.you just can't trust him..as soon as you turn your back, he sits down
*no.. mark.. that 's the owner .. the one who was signing the checks... he can paint standing on his head if he wants..hell, i'll get him a barco-lounger...
*Certainteed NE is running 3 wks behind on shingle production.. so instead of roofing , we're off to Coventry to do some Certainteed fiber cement siding...hey, mark... he went for the new sills, too !
*way to go!..don't forget to take smoko with you...it's a long way to Cumberland Farms
*the roof shingles were scheduled for roof-top delivery today.. so we bailed on the fibercement siding job and cut some of the branches back so the boom truck could get in... lot of complaints about "tight site"...
*anyways .. 3 guys humped 27 square in about 15 minutes once the truck was located....
*good driver....
*and .... done !..then..... off to coventry to finish the siding job...probably stop for breakfast at oatley's.. since it'll be lunch before we get there..
*finished coventry siding...framing the shed roof over the entry....
*Here's my question - in a lot of the shots, I see a jug of Gatorade and a jug of acetone so who drinks what?
*depends on the weather... gatorade for hot days..acetone for cold ones (the acetone was mineral spirits , i think )
*today.. we finished frame & sheath the entry and dug and poured the footings...
*while barry was working the west roof...
*Yoohoo. Barry. Where are you?
*he's rollin up the air hose....on the east roof...
*roy worked the rake end soffit...this is Alcoa Pro-bead...3/8 profile with a 5/8 decorative j-mold....
*not much here today.. had a waranty call on a furnace chimney... the factory solder joint was leaking..so half of the morning ..
*this was the house originally framed with 2x4 rafters..we reframed the roof two years ago... and added the porch
*then back to the digs... roy was getting ready to shingle the gable end...soffit for the box cornice returns.....
*while barry continued the roof & i set the posts that will be boxed for the entry columns......
*mike...i would be in carpenter heaven with all the new equipment i see in your pix... do you move to next jobsite using an 18 wheeler??E
*no.. just a pickup truck... but i hope the next job isn't too far...it usually isn't.... this is Rhode Island , ya no
*yup....the most DENSELY populated state
*sidewall shingling .. laced corners..
*mike have you got a shot of your starter course?....I'd like to see the flashing? detail
*here's the starter course... 15 lb. felt with a 3/8 PT kicker.. and then the double starter course...the only flashing is the felt....
*more sidewall & roofing.......
*trying to make up my mind wether to go with a 4-wide (7 " ) X 8 high diamond....
*or a 5 wide ( 8 " ) x 10 high diamond...
*decided less was more this time....
*so at the end of the day ....roofing and shingling .. more progress....
*we finished up the gable end and took down the staging so we can get our excavator in tomorrow.....we're leaving the top roof shingles off because that's how we're going to blow in the cellulose in the cathedral ceiling....
*here's some of the shingling detail...
*and the cornice return....
*today was excavation day... ran our interceptor french drain with 6" perf pipe about 18" below finish grade.....the real pipe is 18" below this one...
*all the perf pipe is sleeved with filter fabric....here's the grading at the end of the day...
*before we could do that we had to get rid of the dumpster.... and the old shed which we gave away..the new owner winched it onto a tilt-trailer... so while that was goin on top side .. we ran a new well line.. and dug all the deck post holes for 40" frost depth..then poured a footing in each...
*so now the same view as the opening post looks like this...
*roy finished up the vinyl soffit while i was pushing paper in the office (ok.. i took a little nap)..here's a close-up showing the vented on the left & the non-vented on the right...
*and here's a corner detail...we end the shingle course in a standard 7/8" J-channel...
*then , this afternoon.. we got ready to blow out the new kitchen wall...
*by installing the double -LVL beam in the old gable end...this is the carrying beam for the stud wall that carries the half-scissor trusses....later we'll open this wall up so the kitchen will be open to the hallway...
*today, roy topped the wall...so we can back it with 3"eps bonded with 1/2"drywall for flamespread protection.. since the eps would be exposed in the old attic...
*and i was outside breaking concrete for the new entry..
*breaking with feathers & wedges...
*Mike, Pardon my ignorance, but I'm afraid that I don't know what a feather or wedge is. Could you give a bried run-down. Thanks.Jon Blakemore
*john.. in the picture above there are three wedges inserted into three pair of feathers...you drill the proper size hole , place the feathers & wedges... tap, tap, tap.. and the rock or concrete splits...if there is a grain to the rock, you can split it right along the grain..those are my big set.. i've also got a bunch of smaller feathers...but these work better for concrete...
*Ok Mike, I am surprised that I have never heard of this type of tool before. Where did you get your set?Jon
*the small ones i got from Barre Quarry in VT..the big ones i had a machinist make for me...
*he's lying.....he's had 'em since he was one of the foremen on the pyramids..( and he used to duck off to the nearest palm tree for a nap back then also)
*ho.. hummm. well, after my nap i finished breaking open the retaining wall...
*and roy put up the 3" EPS to seperate the old attic from the new cathedral ceiling wall...
*then after lunch we put up the in-fill T-1-11 so we can start framing the deck on Monday...
*Mike: This whole thread is better than any thing I have ever seen in any how-to book, text book, or even FHB(at $9.taxed Can)!!! Call a publisher soon......Newf......ps...Hope the weather holds out...
*newf.. the weather was great again.. 60's in the afternoon..today we started framing the main part of the new deck.. 6x6 posts.. 2x10 joists @ 12" oc...
*here's a view from the other angle....
*more of the same today.. except it's a little more like Fall weather...
*and the other angle...
*next challenge is to tie in the front...looks like the first deck was cantilevered.. and someone chopped off the old joists... then blocked over to hang the deck we just took off... a lot of evidence of leaks following the old joists back into the structure...we've dropped the new deck 6" below finished floor.. so now we'll come up with something...
*well.. we decided to flush cut the old joist butts and then pack it out with a layer of 1/2" & a layer of 5/8" .. that will bring us flush with the T-1-11 below...
*so.. roy did yeoman's work while i went shoppin....and schmoozin cause the clients were here for the day..the only tough thing about these Alum-a-pole planks is the deck is a killer to kneel on.. so .. the knee pads come in handy...Happy Thanksgiving everyone !
*roy repaired the rot in the corner.. while i met with our next clients.. then we installed the band joist and the two south posts....another short sleeve shirt day...
*more record highs and short sleeves...set the rest of the posts and framed most of the joists....
*finished framing the joists and doubled the trimmer all around...
*doubled this trimmer too and thru-bolted it because of the increased load..this section is 12" OC...
*bent the flashings for the band joist...with ice & water behind...
*pocket cuts for the 6x6 posts.... start with skilsaw..
*finish with jigsaw..
*and we're using a 1.5" overhang with the doubled trimmer and the more massive 6x6...
*so.. after screwing around all day...
*Looks Solid! Nice pics, keep 'em coming. Do you pitch the deck a little for drainage? If so how much?
*drizzle today... doing some inside demo..stray... the Trex is gapped 3/16 so no pitch...
*drizzle am....intermittant rain.. but we still got a lot done..here's the gaps ... 3/16 side to side & 1/8 on the end (8d nail)
*and the flashing... brown coil stock over ice & water..
*so ..the big portion... 15' x 22' is decked..
*and here is where it changes to a 6' x 40' across the front...
*during yesterday's rain.. roy opened the new wall in the kitchen...
*so..looking west ...
*monday... i'm going to take a refresher course in Chief Architect... while Roy starts the front decking
*Hey Mike, why ain't youse guys using those new maine decking brackets that Pro-dek is fighting so hard to get everyone to use ?And that blue barrell... Is that going to be their new sink, er their new tub ?
*the blue bait barrel is left over from cadioli..he was always down lobsterin .. when he wasn't taking a snooze on the rocks...sometimes i'd get back from my naps and actually find 'em workin.. but they can't fool an old fooler..
*Yeah! and which way??
*before we can set the stair stringers we had to reshape the old landing....
*set the landing post, built the forms, and coated the old slab with a bonding agent since we'll only be pouring 2" over that part....
*a lot of rocks and 18 bags of Sakrete later...don't you just love it when the concrete won't take a set...here it is at 6pm , still in short sleeved shirt too....under the lights
*while Roy was stripping forms and hanging a 42" door..i picked up Barry and went off to install a TruLight tubular skylight...and a deadbolt....here's the roof jack...
*after i finished the deadbolt .. gave barry a hand with the tube....ok .. i took his picture, alright ?
*here it is with the storm collar and roof portion complete...
*here's a SolarTube installed in the kitchen of the same house by someone else about 4 years ago...we are now dealers for TruLite & SunTunnel....the owner also wants us to look at the roof ....hey, looks like they need a new roof.. guess we'll be bidding that next year....
*hmmmm... the southeast is 20 years old... and the rest is about 30...
*Let me guess. That's where they sit the santa decoration every year....
*bingo....
*here's Roy's baluster and railing parts factory....
*Roy installed the stringers and treads...
*while i cut the 6x6 posts with the 10" ...
*then routed the corners and gave them a coat of primer....
*and across Mackeral Cove is a house we built in '85...
*uh oh... someone's pullin Mark's lobsta traps...
*end of another great day... not bad for December...
*today was break in the new tools day.. we set up our shop to make the subrail... plow & bead.. and the baluster fillet...here's the new plunge router and stand.. right next to a 20 year old Millers Falls...still runs great..remember Millers Falls.?. me neither...
*there's the fillet & subrail.. and the Fein vacumn..you plug the tool into the vacumn and it turns on when you trigger the tool...what'll they think of next ?
*Man, this is an incredible thread. Thanks, Mike, for putting on such a good show!
*Mike,Hope you don't mind a dumb question. Why is the solar tube light you installed up high on that collar and the older one is close to the roof? And I find this thread fascinating and instructive. Thanks for all the pics!Mary
*mary... the old one is a SolaTube...the new one is a Tru-Lite... different companies..different ways of skinning the cat..
*today we cut the subrails and shoes to length , then roy set up his paint shop....
*this is all the waste from the Trex deck.... ....15'x 22' & 6' x 40'.... it was upside down again....that's why i deleted it 2x
*Thanks Mike, so I take it they both work just as well, just different designs?Mary
*mary.. here's my take on it...bigger is better.. for hallways and small areas like bathrooms.. 12" to 14"for bigger areas 16" to 22"
*ThanksMary
*yesterday was more paint shop.. and roy put our new bandsaw together..today we started the rail assembly..here's the centers marked and drilled for the 1x1 balusters...from 5/4 x 4 meranti...
*and a final check on the layout ...
*the balusters are locked into the ploughed sub-rail with the fillet spacers.. and the shoe is pinned with 6d SS ring shank nails with the heads cut off..
*then the shoe is set and driven onto the pins in the balusters......
*so the assembly looks like this......
*after the rail sections are attached to the posts the Trex rail will cap it...
*MikeWhat a disappointment. I thought I was going to see a bandsaw.Nice work & good thread.
*barry, next week we'll watch the tape on using a bandsaw.. then... look out...to think i used to help my dad build boats with a chisel , an handsaw (dull) , a bit and brace & a hammer...ah well, bestyacanchagot...
*u no, luka.. i was gonna do that.. but i figgered u might get there 1st... thanks..
*NP
*rain the last two days.. finished the regular sections.....
*layout the stair rail section...
*so Roy put in the rest of the PropaVent
*here's the 12" energy heel on the scissors trusses..
*and the exterior in the vented soffit area...
*and the rail sections all have two coats of finish so we can install them after Christmas..Merry Christmas to you and yours !
*Shouldn't that crushed pop can be inside the stud bay ?
*damn... i did it again .. uh.. thanks luka
*Luka, what do you use to alter the pictures? You are gooood....
*Paint Shop Pro.
*errr..Mike...I don't know if you noticed....but roy has built some of that balustrading crooked......
*not to worry, mate ... it's all part of the master plan.. i note that it's 9:30 pm tonite there in brisbane.... just checking my "GetTime" clock....he heh heh heh
*whilst i was takin a nap... roy started installing the rail...
*here's the corner... all assembled with a pocket jig and SS screws...
*Mike, I notice that you are taking great care with the railing assembly and your effort shows. I also noticed that the posts are 6x6 PT SYP (correct?). Do you have problems with checking? If so, how do you deal with them? I realize the time saved as compared to wrapping all posts with 1x. I'm curious as to your point of view concerning the two methods. Jon Blakemore
*yeah...and I'd like to know how you straightened 'em...when I saw 'em last they were only good for boatbuilding
*straight side up mate !jon, we do have a problem with checking.. but i prefer to live with that problem than the alternatives..because this deck is so high, i wanted to use 6x6 for the mass.. and that eliminated boxing the posts above the deck..we've painted and stained PT for about 20 years now... and it has been my experience that if you get a sealer / primer on it as soon as possible.. and the installation has enough pitch to shed water.....(as opposed to PT decking).. the checking can be kept to a minimum... and , if it checks , it checks...anything that is going to be painted we buy as far ahead of time as possible, rack it.. get it surface dry and seal/prime it as soon as practical... even if we get spot peeling.. we can touch that up...if we're working with 4x4..and it is fairly formal.. we'll box 'em..let's see how this one turns out..
*Mike,I'm somewhat familiar with the methods for kerfing large framing members to reduce checking. I'm wondering if you could incorporate something like that in your posts? Maybe even ltwo v-grooves in each side, like a control joint in concrete- gives the check someplace straight and less noticeable to go. Does anyone have any idea if this would work?Jon
*all our posts for exterior we leave rough sawn...virtually eliminates checking.
*it's OK Mary....Mike got used to dumb questions last year when I was with him.
*hey.. who's mary?anyhooo... whilst i was signing up our next job... roy continued to install rail.. here's the mockup of the post cap...
*oh.... and roy says ....Happy New Year.. and winter is finally here...but the days are getting longer.... and the sun is getting stronger.. so i'll join roy in wishing you all a Happy 2002...
*You've never herd Mark talk to Mary before ? I thought he spent quite a bit of time around you recently. He must've been taking his meds while there, then.Howcome Roy is always growling ?
*just his basic cheery nature....
*Mike,This is Mary: Tesaje - 04:22pm Dec 11, 2001 EST (134.1) Zone 6aMike, Hope you don't mind a dumb question. Why is the solar tube light you installed up high on that collar and the older one is close to the roof? And I find this thread fascinating and instructive. Thanks for all the pics! MaryHappy New Year Mike,Billy
*billy... i missed ya...ain't it just like mark to bring up that old chestnut,i'll go back and take a look to see if i slighted mary..BTW.. where ya been ?
*Mike, Thanks for going to the trouble of posting all these pics....one of my favs on the board. You guys do great work!Happy New Year!
*allen... thank you..i'm glad our humble efforts are fun for others...and i do mean humble.. when i see some of the stuff you others put out... and thanks to taunton for making this gallery available... what a resource !
*yesterday roy furred the ceiling..today was post cap day.. so. . here's part of our efforts............
*and the trial fitting....
*had a little snow.. and the plumber and electrician are due to make an appearance.. so it's crunch time for the partitions...studs vary from 8' to 12' with the scissors truss...
*Didjoo get a better camera ?
*no.. probably light from over my shoulder...same camera as pro.. just last year's model....the 950 Coolpix
*You've got a wicked bow to your top plate there Mike....
*thanks, mike.. i'll put a string line on it and find out if it's the plate or the lens....
*Huh? I was never slighted. Still lurking on this thread and still finding it very interesting, tho it's been a while since I was here - got sick and work and you know the drill. I'm charmed you remember me :-)Mary
*mike... i put a string line on that plate... straight as- a- arrer... it's teh wide angle lens i'm using..mary... glad yur back to fightin trim....... i been sentenced to paper -work for about a week.. so roy's been busy... the plumber showed and roughed
*and roy's been working the weather on the deck.. in between rain & snow...here's the end post & cap...
*and some more red cedar....
*Mike, I love the post. Been following it all along.I want to know if you trimmed the Andersens in post#231 with Trex. I really want to offer that and wonder how well it takes paint, what type of paint & primer, and how do you charge for the custom milling. I also wonder if you rabbet the back for the nailing flange? Please, if any other tricks can be shared, I'd love to grab them.
*these windows are typical for us.. the sill is trex, casings are GP PrimeTrim.. the sill has a rabbet for the shingles..and we buildup a flat around the nailing flange with two layers of ice & water so the casings won't rock..we don't charge extra, it's just a typical detail with us..in other words, we charge more for it than someone who is not offering it... but i don't seperately state an up charge..
*the electricians finally arrived.. man, they've gone from 3 employees to 7 and they're working 7 day weeks..tomorrow should finish the rough-in...
*paperwork..yeah right....I've seen your office remember?......how could you find any papers there? ( ones that you need that is? )...now be fair..take a pic of your desk and office... BEFORE YOU CLEAN UP!! )and post it.
*that'd be like taking a picture of your wife with curlers in her hair... not exactly putting your best efforts out there....hey.. did u break ur camera? or quit work... again ?
*nope....just same old boring stuff, doubt any will be too interested....quit work...now there's an idea..know anyone that can teach me golf?
*took delivery of 100 bags of cellulose insul. today..let the games begin
*we're trying a "regal" wall.. G.La Londe put me onto it...you staple a poly mesh to the studs, apply const. adhesive and blow the cellulose thru a hole until it fills the bay with compacted cells.. we're using a 3/4 nozzle.. but still on the learning curve.. here's some of the poly with temporary furring strips to maintain the stud plane around the electrical devices and in the energy corners..in the past our insulator blew all the walls thru the blueboard... but he didn't want this job hey G..... gimme some pointers....
*here's a finished bay....
*Mike, how do you do insulation around the windows- fiberglass, low/no expanding foam or will spray cells work there too?
*j. we used to use fiberglass.. we switched to foam about 10 years ago..
*Mike, What's the cost relation per sq./ft. between FG batts and DP cell?Jon
*jon.. i don't know.. they used to be about the same here.. but i haven't used fiberglass in about 3 years, since i finally figured out ways to do cellulose in all our work...now, the only fiberglass we use is for stuffing holes so we don't get blowouts.. everything else is now either RPS or cellulose...
*rebuilt the nozzle from 3/4 to 1" and finally got the hang of the borrowed blower...here's some more of the regal wall....
*pretty sure i got more up my nose than in the wall....G. LaLonde.. am i doin this right ?
*Mike, I'll be interested in your opinion of the system once the job's complete. What's the advantage in doing it this way? The certainty that the bay has been filled 100%? I assume the rock goes on afterwards as usual? Thanks.
*stray.. finished blowing the walls today.. i'll do a test panel and figure the lb/cf we achieved.. if it's decent.. then i like the regal wall...if not, then we'll go back to blowing it thru the blueboard before they skim coat..but yes.. sure do get a great visual about what's insulated and what's not..g.lalonde may have some tips on avoiding some of the mess...
*we adjusted the regal wall ... took the bulges out by sweeping with a stiff broom...the sample panel tells me we got 3.6 LB/CF..so i like it..here's the area over the kitchen beam.. remember that rafter , mark ?
*we got the walls insulated just in time for the blueboard delivery
*these guys get better all the time... last job the operator had to work the boom from the truck...now it 's a radio remote...some in one window.. and some in another..
*so.. (50) 12's & (30) 8's...supposed to get hung on friday.. then we can blow the cathedral ceiling trusses with cellulose 12" to 20"...
*Kent Plaster started hanging blueboard today.. ceilings first so we can blow the attic..notice the stud in the lower left.. it has a stamp on it that says 7'6.. every piece of wood in the old house had a stamp telling what it's use was..
*here's the bumpout inside the closet to set the refrigerator into the wall so it will align with the front of the cabinets
*and up inside the trusses.. here's the 3" foam with 1/2" gypsum to seperate the vertical attic walls from the heated space... the gypsum provides the fire protection
*here's the view inside the scissors trusses.. tomorrow this will all be buried in 20" of cellulose ( 24" before it settles )
*Mike, awesome post if I haven't said it before. When you refer to blueboard, that is meant for skimcoat plaster and it's different from standard drywall, right? Also, what purpose does the 3" ridgid ins. serve? Isn't that insul on an interior wall?
*dustin....yes, blueboard is for skim coat plaster...the 3" foam is on the back side of the vertical wall in the kitchen that seperates the old (cold) attic from the high-ceiling area of the kitchen..
*worked a short day , so we blew half the attic.. 40 bags.. here's the old US Fiber machine with the Hurricane blower......
*and here's what 24" of cellulose looks like...see the little stick peaking out of the middle of the cells... well, that's my guide.. it's 24" long..
*while Roy was outside shingling the gable....
*Kent Plaster was doing scratch coat.. here's the refrigerator inset....
*and the high wall finish plaster in the SE bedroom/ sitting room...
*and Roy is his usual smiling self.....buy him some happy pills Mike will ya?..or just take him out to breakfast...hey!!! I know...take him to Dunkin Donuts in Cranston.....those two just might hit it off!!
*They plaster the walls first down there Mike? Here it's always ceilings first. Looks like the job is coming along nicely!
*mike..they're going to sand finish the ceilings tomorrow.. except the bath , which will be smooth...i'll ask Gene if they change the sequence if all the ceilings are smooth..
*mike: gene said that if the ceilings are smooth , they do them the same time as the walls, room by room..these guys always put down 15 lb. felt before they start.. so clean up is easy for them.. here's the kitchen.. and we installed the underlayment so we can put the cabinets right in place..
*the cabinets were delivered today ... so Roy started installing...
*and i was finishing up a new work bench for the new PC table saw and the router table...
*Mike,What does the bench weigh? Is this something you only set up for a multi day job, or is it portable enough to be a daily mover? What do you have your miter saw on? Just wondering.Jon
*jon , the bench weighs about 30#, all 1/4" ply, polyurethane glue, and ledger board.. the only beefy part is the top..our miter saw can set up where ever....usually on some planks with block outriggers..
*off to the accountant this aft... glued up the entry porch rail cap this AM..
*went in the kitchen to talk to roy... about cabinets... but he didn't come in today.... this guy said roy's fine .. and not to worry... something about cadioli saying roy didn't have a sensauma...
*Mike, isn't that Roy's third cousin from Jersey?
*.. i don't know , dustin.. i run a pretty loose jobsite.. you never know who's gonna wander in off the interstate....
*roy finished installing the cabinets and started on the countertops....
*while i was working on the entry rail....
*spent the mornig at the lumber yard getting all our guns worked on by the Bostich reps...buy a box of nails .. they rebuild the gun..
*roy glued up the countertops.. here they are upside down...
*then in the afternoon , we installed the last courses of shingles and the ridge vent... here we're folding over the 15# felt before we install the ShingleVent II...
*Mikewhat's the plan for the floor in the entry? hello to the little dutch girl
*mackerel cove is pretty even in Winter
*in the entry OUTSIDE, i'm going to change the grade with gravel and use concrete pavers ( the ones that look like cobblestones ) to ramp up to a landing.the little dutch girl , interrupted in making her lists, replys:Hi, Mark ! how about cooking up some peach chicken ?
*that's apricot
*no, it's not.. you called it APE ricot.. i remember now...
*APEricot...APricot..what the?....those little orange coloured things with stones in 'em.
*Roy got all the cabinets installed, the edging on teh counters.. and we even hung the microwave so he can finish up the crown molding...
*the laminate is Nevamar ARP... 5' x 12' sheets... laid out in the next room..tomorrow we go dig a hole for the next job so the counters will have to wait...
