but interresting....maybe it can be moved and discussed. Jeff
Genius has it's limits.....but stupidity knows no bounds
It just seemed like a topic that would go well with a bunch of contractors at break, looks like it did
Got me there John- It probably means you will get to build twice as many decks because the nails will give out before the wood.

"Rather be a hammer than a nail"
It seems in the haze of what I call a memory, that there was a discussion not to long ago that included mention of Plastic framing members and beams. I don't no if you can use your nail gun, but I bet the plastic won't eat the nails. Of course I thought that Sacramento could beat the lakers too. You think that stainless nails are high, try buying the screws!!

We are fine craftsmen and master carpenters. We will find ways through spectacular joinery to build the decks without fasteners. If we need to ,we will drill and peg certain joints with the new super lumber. If they can make 40% more ,then I can make 200% more by using the new stuff.....who's with me?
That's worth a try. If the deck falls apart, just call the foul on Pollard.

Swan secure has ring shank SS nails up to 3 1/4 " for sure in plastic collated, probably in wire too. They sell direct http://www.swansecure.com. I've bought from them in the past with great satisfaction. Nails can be costly though, good thing we can pass that cost on. Can you link any discussions on the new wood concerning this, it is interesting.

Hey Doggie,,,thanks for the link on the nails,,just venting a little here,,I like change but not when it inpacks my business this way,,I could make this an art form and joint the frame with just one little draw back,,hmmmm making a living?..about the only big change I have made like that is steam bending the frame,,that sells well to the right customer,,I got the info on the new wood from the latest Deck Industry Association Mag,DeckIndustry.org.man the price of SS ringshank per thousand around $135,,up against 40$ per three thousand with electrated plated,,Right now I give the customer a 10 year warenty for the frame,,I am thinking that is going to change,I have no idea how long the new wood is good for,,,its a funny world,,and very dangerous,,John Hyatt deckmastersllc.com
Anyone else see an article not that long ago about tests of ceramic and plastic FRH nails ? I've heard the only drawbacks are that they can only be driven by a nailer and that you only get one chance. Predicted to be about 1/2 the price of SS..

I use stainless steel ring shanks all of the time. 3 1/2 inch 10 p are $130.00 a box (2000) from Amazon .com
If you want a stronger connection then go to stainless steel lag bolts. 65 cents each will buy you 4 inch longx3/8ths. grab a small impact wrench and they fly in in a few seconds.
