I’m new to this forum, but my scavenging habit goes back a ways. Recently I’ve come across a source of old brick (abandoned factories), and I’m wondering if I can use them to pave a driveway. They’re just the bricks used in the walls, now falling down as the mortar deteriorates. Assuming I can accumulate enough of them, will they hold up to cars and Maine winters?

Most likely these bricks will be too soft. They will absorb water and freezing will break them up if used for paving. You need a hard fired brick for paving. Try soaking one in water for a few hours and pop it in your freezer and see what happens to it.
If you can get them the bricks that were used pave streets are the best for what you want to do.
It beats mud but in the long run, you will be disappointed with all that work and the results you end up with
